26 Fake Video Games in Movies and TV

The Movie: Surf Ninjas (1993)
The Game: “Surf Ninjas”
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
This is a truly fantastic film by any measure. I kind of just wanted to include it in this list. My original plan was to include it because of a legendary mistake: supposedly, the Game Gear the kid plays has no game cartridge in it. Which would make that a “fake” game, I guess. This source says that scene occurs when the kid mentions “Shinobi” (embedded below), but that definitely has a cartridge in it. What gives? Is this a fake-fake game rumor? Sadly, the real Surf Ninjas game was real for Game Gear.

The Movie: eXistenZ (1999)
The Game: “eXistenZ”
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
The male enhancement product-sounding film eXistenZ is about this virtual reality game that uses “UmbyChords” to jack you in to the game world, organically. But the fake world becomes more appealing than the real world for folks, and this group of “realists” hate that and want the game destroyed. And Jude Law makes a gun out of bones in his food.

The Movie: Gamebox 1.0 (2004)
The Game: Gamebox 1.0 (but it’s a console, not a game)
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
This is another one of those “the game organically jacks you into the a virtual reality world, where you die in real life if you die in the game” things. Charlie Nash has to save his girlfriend (it’s Topanga from Boy Meets World) in Gamebox 1.0, and if he doesn’t, he dies. VERY low quality. Love the “robot voice” effect.

The Movie: Stay Alive! (2004)
The Game: “Stay Alive!”
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
This film’s tagline was literally: “If you die in the game, you die in real life.” I don’t really need to write anymore. It’s Final Destination, but the “game” is hunting them instead of death. And it stars Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle.
Inaccuracy: Their controllers are PlayStation, but when they’re playing the game they bring up the Xbox play control menu.
Funny Thing: he use a garbled version of the Contra code to unlock “zombie boobs.”
Funny Thing: Adam Goldberg’s character dies in Stay Alive! the exact same way he dies in Saving Private Ryan.

The Show: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 5 Episode 6 “The Game” (1991)
The Game: (Unnamed)
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
Video game addiction has now spread to space, and poluted a great show with a pretty weak episode (in the very otherwise strong Season 5, too). It was the sex maniac Riker’s fault for bringing the filthy game aboard, and it’s up to Wesley to save everyone.

The Movie: Cloak & Dagger (1984)
The Game: “Cloak & Dagger”
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
After E.T. Boy (Henry Thomas) did E.T., he did Cloak & Dagger. This little boy stumbles across an Atari 2600 cartridge of the game, but it has secret conspiracy information inside. The police don’t believe him, and think he’s just mixing up reality and the game world. He’s a gamer, of course he’s lying.

The Movie: Never Say Never Again (1965)
The Game: (Unnamed)
The Genre: Video Games Are Gonna’ Kill You, Sucka
The Fake:
James Bond (Sean Connery) himself is now tasked with beating this smarmy guy at this tempest-looking game. Every round he loses causes him more physical pain. Also, anyone else notice that the game’s announcer sounds exactly like the announcer from the beautiful top-down shooter Ikaruga?

Thank god that by page 3 of this there was other categories other than “Video games are gonna kill you, sucka”. I really hate hollywood scare-tactics, and the video-game ones are the worst.

It’s almost like the old people who run hollywood are somehow afraid of new technology! ¬_¬

have you ever heard of a british show called KillerNet? it was on tv in the nineties i think and was about a video game where you meticulously plan the murder of a person in the superrealistic game and… well you can guess where it’s going. anyway, it’s really good, should’ve been on the list and i’m guessing the only reason it isn’t is because you haven’t seen it. so go see it and update your list
