20 Game-Improving Mods for Skyrim

Roleplaying games get a leg up on PC, simply due to mods. That has never been more true than with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Bethesda’s gargantuan RPG keeps improving little by little, thanks to the way fans use the extensive, developer-provided mod tools. Not only has the game been overhauled by better, newer, and fancier graphics — mods also provide significantly better gameplay.

Read on for a list of the 20 best mods that significantly improve the vanilla experience, tweak some of the underlying systems, or replace parts of the gameplay altogether.

SPERG

One of the flaws in vanilla Skyrim is that you can level yourself into a corner. Pick some wrong perks, or spread your points too broadly, and the game world steamrolls you.

This is where SPERG (Skyrim Perk Enhancements and Rebalanced Gameplay) comes in. SPERG replaces the vanilla skilltrees, gets rid of the 5-point upgrade perks most skilltrees have at the 0 position, and balances the world to boot. It also makes the game less grindy and more friendly to a broader array of play styles.

Dual-Wield Parrying

Vanilla Skyrim leaves the player without a chance to block when wielding two weapons at once. With this mod, you’re no longer defenseless. There are several versions, which don’t all do the same thing, so choose the version you want to install carefully.

Frostfall – Hypothermia Camping Survival

Frostfall adds an intricate survival system to Skyrim. With the mod installed, your character can freeze to death if you don’t wear the proper clothing, get wet, or just, you know, stay outside in a raging blizzard for too long.

Deadly Dragons

Skyrim’s dragons can a bit of a disappointment, especially when reach high levels and a pack of wolves starts to pose a much more significant threat. This mod seeks to rectify that issue by making dragons more dangerous and offering a much bigger variety of dragon types, while also offering a bunch of other options like a configuration tool for dragon assaults, which makes dragon encounters less predictable and much more challenging.

Deadly Combat

Deadly Combat makes Skyrim’s ho-hum melee a bit more Dark Souls-like. This is achieved by lowering armor ratings, making blocking more effective, and turning shields into an essential component. The stamina costs of attacks and blocks have also been increased, so combat becomes a lot more intense and requires a lot more attention and tactics from the player. To top things off, the AI has been tweaked a bit, so now enemies won’t rush the player but play as deadly teams that will seek to outflank and out-think the player.

ASIS – Automatic Spells Increased Spawns

This mod gives enemies access to all spells and perks, while at the same time significantly increasing the number of mobs spawned.  Most importantly, it gives enemies the ability to use health, magicka and stamina potions. The mod also tweaks the AI a bit, making the game more challenging and varied.

Touring Carriages

Adding a bit of Red Dead Redemption flavor to the game, this mod allows you to travel by carriage in real time, making the vehicles more than just fast-travelling shortcuts. Also there are now more routes served by carriages.

As I’ve said before: Skyrim is not so much a game you play as it is a place you visit.

The fact that many of these mods make the world much bigger, deeper and more immersive than before just makes me love the fact that this game exists.
