2K: Online Service Migration for Borderlands, Civilization Titles

2K Games has announced their plan to move forward with online service changes in the wake of the news that Gamespy is shutting down its online service.

While Borderlands and a number of Civilization games will be transitioned to Steamworks servers, there are a number of legacy titles that will lose their online service entirely.

For the following titles, you can expect interruption of online play, matchmaking, and VOIP service while the transition is taking place. The transition will begin May 31, 2014. 2K says that offline play should not be affected.

  • Borderlands®
  • Civilization® III
  • Civilization® III: Conquests
  • Civilization® III: Play the World
  • Civilization® IV
  • Civilization® IV: Beyond the Sword
  • Civilization® IV: Colonization
  • Civilization® IV: Warlords

For the much longer list below, there will be no transition. These games will have their online services discontinued as of May 31, 2014, when GameSpy shuts down.

  • Close Combat First to Fight (PC / Mac)
  • Jetfighter (PC)
  • Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector (PC)
  • Leadfoot (PC)
  • Rune (PC)
  • Stronghold 2 (PC)
  • Stronghold Legends (PC)
  • Top Spin (PS2 / PC)
  • Top Spin 2 (PC / DS)
  • Vietcong (PC)
  • Vietcong Demo (PC)
  • Vietcong Fist Alpha (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 Demo (PC)
  • MLB Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution (DS)
  • Major League Baseball 2K9 Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • NHL 2K10 (Wii)
  • NBA 2K10 (Wii)

While it sucks that some games will lose their online service, it’s not a surprise that 2K didn’t see those titles as being worth the investment. Most of them are quite outdated (except you, Vietcong. I still love you!). At least Borderlands and Civilization will still be supported, which is a lot better than a kick in the teeth, right?

Ah, good ol’ Civ 4. I still play that game to death sometimes. If only the final patch hadn’t introduced some annoying UI quirks. At least it removed the CD check, which is a pretty good trade :)
