3 Million DIRT 3 Steam Keys Leaked

The ease of grabbing a game on Steam makes it a favorite destination of folks buying games. It also eases distribution of special promotions for publishers. For example, Bohemia Interactive was giving away a copy of DIRT 3 with the purchase of an AMD video card. Unfortunately, the ease of just handing out Steam keys also has some drawbacks. One of them became quite apparent yesterday.

Over on the Steam forums, there’s a post from a Bohemia Interactive team member that says around 3 million DIRT 3 keys that were intended for that promotion had been leaked onto the internet. While he speculated about the course of action they’d take to resolve the issue, no definitive plans are revealed. However, we do know how the keys were accessed, as he said,

in short never put .sql database with game keys on webserver where simple missing .htaccess can leak it

Oops. I’d imagine that most of those keys will be blacklisted, so if you’re one of the folks who thought you were getting a copy of DIRT 3 with your video card, you may have a bit of a wait while this is resolved.
