While the actual figure itself is astonishing – 5,019,337 units sold in just over a year – Nintendo’s success in Japan isn’t surprising at all. The numbers come from Enterbrain and are an estimate as of January 20.
Software sales are dominated by Nintendo, with the top five titles all Nintendo-published titles. Only two of the three are what you’d traditionally consider a videogame – Wii Fit, Wii Play and Wii Sports were three of the top five selling games. (Wii Sports isn’t bundled with the Wii in Japan.)
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Mario Galaxy’s sales are disappointing which I thought they were when the game was first released, but it’s not like Nintendo isn’t raking in the cash as-is.
Something tells me we (or Japan, at least) are about to see a huge number of new third-party games that take advantage of the Wii Fit board. I just can’t put my finger on why I’d draw such a conclusion – oh, it’s common sense.

Pretty impressive. Whats even more impressive is that the attach rate for the Wii was so high in NA and PAL. Something like 7 in NA. Wha? Thats right up there with the 360. Amazing.
