5 Things We Want from GTA V

2. Even Better Mo-cap

When GTA IV came out, it had some of the best mo-cap acting I had ever seen in a game. The way it brought its rogue’s gallery of characters to life — the over-the-top body language, the enthusiastically snorted lines of cocaine — was one of the game’s most enduring pleasures. Coupled with Rockstar’s talents for writing and storytelling, the mo-cap gave every scene a ring of authenticity, even if everything was exaggerated and larger-than-life.

Quality mo-cap is now ubiquitous in games (and movies) — the technology just gets better and better. In particular, the facial motion capture technology employed in L.A. Noire is set to revolutionize gaming, if it ever attains widespread use. As mentioned earlier, Rockstar published L.A. Noire, so they should be reasonably familiar with it. The combination of Motion Scan and Grand Theft Auto would be truly transcendent. Even if it proves impossible, a commitment to hyper-modern mo-cap by the developers would ensure that the game lives up to the franchise’s incredibly high standard.

1. Psychologically Believable Characters

Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz, and Luis Lopez are all sympathetic guys. Despite being criminals, they seem like they follow some kind of moral code. At various points in their respective stories, they all express reluctance to do what they’re being ordered to do.

Then the player takes control, and has no choice but to steer Niko, Johnny, and Luis around as they enthusiastically murder hundreds of people. Sometimes you have to wonder if the mission designers and the writers were even in close communication with each other.

A Grand Theft Auto protagonist has to be comfortable with murder — of this there is no doubt. With this in mind, could we back off on the “killer with a conscience” hand-wringing? Or at least apply some consistency to the characterization? Alternatively, designing missions that don’t require you to massacre 50 police officers with a rocket launcher would help make the qualms of the man holding the rocket launcher a little bit more believable.

I’ll tell you want I want from GTA V. An Achievement for “Killing All the Cops.”

It’s something I’ve wanted for a while. The cop mechanics are kind of (and this sounds silly) unrealistic in GTA games. There are apparently INFINITE cops in the city. You should be able to–Horde style–wear them down and deplete their reserves and F-ing win the city, eventually.

This would be an awesome Achievement to attempt with a friend, and make videos of. It would need to be understandably difficult to get.

Do it Rockstar!

I’d like customisation options through the roof – clothing, character features, weapons, cars, buildings, boats, anything!

Bastion’s Buddies NEEDS to return. That channel never got old.

A quality cover system is necessary, the gunplay in GTA4 is already badly dated.

A reward/medal/upgrade system and Stat Tracking to rival or beat the depth of Gears 3 or Black Ops. Medals for excellent play, medals for stupidity, and a ‘seriously’-like 100% completion acheivement for doing EVERYTHING.

No co-op or multiplayer. Co-op GTA sucked. GTA should be single player only.
