A Mass Effect Movie Is Happening

meProduction house Legendary Pictures, the folks behind The Dark Knight and 300 among other big-ass tentpoles, has picked up the film option on Mass Effect, and they are not messing around on this; they’re already in talks with writer Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, most recently) to put together a first draft.

Protosevich isn’t a name that inspires much confidence — the guy also wrote Poseidon — but this would make him a bit of an “it” guy right now, what with him having work on Thor and the Oldboy remake too. Ultimately, Protosevich is irrelevant; he won’t screw it up on his own, and he won’t write anything particularly profound. I’ll reserve judgment until we find out more about the project down the road.

The game very much lends itself to being filmed, since it’s actually more than just a series of action set pieces. Basically, it’s structured like a movie or TV show more so than it is like a game, which bodes well for this project.

As Gaming Today’s resident Mass Effect obsessive, I don’t even remotely care about this. There’s just nothing to say, really, as I can’t seem to muster up any sort of emotion about it right now, and as soon as I finish writing this, I’ll probably forget about the whole thing until they choose a director.
