A Tour of FileFront 2.0

Dear readers,
Your eyes do not deceive you. The old news.filefront.com is gone. It has been replaced by its younger, more attractive brother. This post will help get you acquainted with all of the new changes. We appreciate your warm response so far, and we’re excited to kick this thing off! So, without further ado, here’s a tour of FileFront 2.0…

We think we’ve fixed the user account login issue. Try and login, and let us know if you’re still having problems. Thanks!

There are bugs with files. Some files are entirely missing, and you may experience errors while trying to download files. We are aware of these, and are working to fix these issues ASAP. Thank you for your patience!

The “Login” and “Sign Up” buttons aren’t on the homepage yet. They’ll be back shortly. In the meantime, head over to the Upload Files page. You’ll see the Login and Sign Up buttons there. Use those. When you’re redirected back to the homepage, head back over to Upload Files. From there, you can click your account name.

There are definitely bugs with FileFront 2.0, and we’re working hard to fix them all. There are a lot of moving parts to this beast, and it will come to life in fits and starts. However, we’re confident that it will be a healthy, happy site in good time. Thank you for bearing with us.

This is the very first product push in a series of many to come! We have big plans still in the works, so don’t worry if it doesn’t look like we’ve addressed your favorite part of the site yet. Chances are, we’re right there with you! We’ll get there in good time.

First, let’s take a look at all the new goodies in the top nav. We’ll just start at the top left, and work our way to the right.

That always takes you back to the homepage. Duh…

A separate page for all of our news items! FileFront now has a full news room. We bring you up to date information on games in development, announcements, release dates, industry gossip, the whole package. You can filter this content by Latest and Popular, and you can drill down by console if you wish.

This page houses all of our full game reviews. We’re doing our best to bring you as many reviews as possible each month, of all the games we care about. You can filter this content by Latest and Popular, and you can drill down by console, and genre if you wish. We try and keep our reviews short, conversational and honest. We score games on a 0/100 scale.

This is a fun category. Here, you’ll find opinion pieces when we feel like ranting, “list” articles, fun collections of gamer-centric pictures, and other good stuff. You can sort this content by Latest and Popular.

This is a big one. You can use this page to navigate to what we call “Game Landing Pages”–separate walled-off content hubs for individual games. For instance, our Alan Wake Game Landing Page gives you an Overview, all Articles, our Review, our Walkthrough, and also Cheats and Unlockables right there on one page. You can filter the Games page by Latest and Popular, and you can drill down by Console and Genre if you wish.

NOTE: You might notice that some of the Game Landing Pages are a bit empty. They will fill up over time.

We’re committed to helping you beat games! Every month we’ll create high-quality game guides for you, which you can find on this page.

“Cheats” is a catchall term that refers to Achievements, Trophies and Unlockables. Need help finding all the Coffee Thermoses in Alan Wake? Check our Cheats category. Want to see the full list of Crackdown 2 Achievements? Head over to our Cheats page. If we have it, it’ll be right there.

This page houses all editiorial posts where we highlight awesome gameplay vidoes and trailers. We make a big deal out of cool trailers, and also random gems we find online

This is a pretty cool category. We have the tinkering gamer in mind, and our helpful How-To articles are proof. We want to help you do stuff like optimize your system, install new hardware, make good purchasing decisions, etc. From beginner to advanced, we have you covered. Eventually, we’ll even have articles in here explaining how to create your own mods for a bunch of games!

The world of modding is full of great work. Where else can you see Zelda II transformed into an FPS? We’re committed to highlighting all best mods we can find.

News and reviews of all the latest and greatest gaming hardware.

The New Search Bar

It works exactly the same as the old search bar. Except, we’ve added an “Articles” filter to the search bar.

NOTE: Using the search bar to search “Games” will search all “File Landing Pages” in the old FileFront.com database. If you’re looking for, say, all the files for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the “Games” search bar is your best bet.

The New Featured Module

We’ll highlight all of our best stuff right here for you. Whether it’s a review of Limbo, or How to Buy the Best HDTV for Gaming, all our coolest stuff will always be right there.

6 Buttons Underneath the New Featured Module

Here, we’ve preserved all of the most crucial navigational units from the “Legacy” FileFront.com homepage. We’re still the #1 site for gaming files! With these buttons, you can easily access all of the Latest Demos, Patches, Videos, our Forums, Upload Files, and also you can check out the Break.com Game Trailers Channel. It’s a mix of hot gaming trailers, and funny gamer videos.

NOTE: All “Legacy” FileFront.com pages (like Latest Demos), are still currently in the old design. We are working to update those pages as soon as possible.

We hope you like FileFront 2.0 so far! We appreciate your support over the years, and are looking forward to bringing you more great products and content in the future.

Like the new look and all, but for some reason I can’t download anything or at least see the no button where it says I can continue the download.

@Nick. We are aware of these “file bugs.” We’re working to fix them ASAP. Thanks!

On July 21, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Absolutely LOVING the new layout! The only thing that bugs me is the networking sites tab makes it difficult to select a gamesite to go to, as when i mouse over the button and move down to select a game, the menus disappears.

Other than that, great work guys, this site really needed updating. Well worth the wait.

On July 21, 2010 at 6:01 pm

Dear Filefront: Please stop trying to sell yourself out to everybody, you’ve yet to remotely approach competing with any game news/blog site. You’re a game files/downloads site, focus on that, you do it well- or at least did, maybe this whole “2.0″ thing ruined something.
Also that dropdown on the front page, please rename “Please select Console” with “Please select Platform” at least. Console is a box that plugs into your TV and does not appropriately describe PCs or handhelds.

On July 22, 2010 at 6:50 am

i just want to download my game … wtf is you new coming up every time i m trying to download it …

On July 22, 2010 at 10:43 am

People are put out because they cannot download my mod files. Are you going to fix these ‘little bugs’?

Ron Whitaker

On July 22, 2010 at 10:51 am

We are aware of the download issues folks are having. We’re migrating your files to new hardware. As we host a literal ton of files, this takes a bit.

Files that are currently not downloading should be back up soon. Until then, we appreciate your patience while we work to improve your FileFront experience.

On July 22, 2010 at 6:51 pm

You know, normally, when a new site is rolled out it has gone through a few testing stages already. Not only are you testing while live and effing with us all but your entire system is falling apart around you and can’t seem to understand that. Go back to beta and you sorted.

On July 23, 2010 at 8:35 am

Nice site filefront, I always loved this site compared to them s Ign, gametrailers etc. Users should have patience.

Mark Burnham

On July 23, 2010 at 8:49 am

Underneath the hood, we are moving FileFront’s entire database over to a new infrastructure. All of the files are getting moved to a new (better) home. We unfortunately could not test that process, so we didn’t know what little fires would start up. However, we are working hard to get everything working again. All of the bugs are 100% temporary, and should be resolved shortly.

You should be able to login again. Please submit a ticket if you’re still have problems. We may need to reset your password.

On July 23, 2010 at 4:21 pm

guys, be patient. filefront is the best site out there, and i’m already seeing 700K+ on downloads which ive never seen before on this site, and faster then premium ign. filefront are the good guys, give em a break.com

On July 23, 2010 at 8:17 pm

ok the site looks great and all but, how do i sign In and where are my uploads ?

On July 24, 2010 at 4:26 am

I think its great that filefront is trying to reinvent itself, im just praying I can download my files again soon, its been two days.

On July 24, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I wouldn’t mind this new revamp, but it’s terribly overwhelming. Everything is different, and not in the good way. Whereas before, uploading files took a minute to start, it takes a painstakingly long time to even find where I can upload them.

Not only that, but there are too many images. It’s too much at once. I have a 7mbps Internet connection, and it takes me a nice seven or eight seconds to load this page, whereas before it took maybe two or three.

Please, I urge you guys, take this back to the drawing board. It looks nice, but sometimes functionality supersedes design and visual appeal. I really want to like the new design, but I just can’t.

When your finished Completely transfering “all” files? So I can download my file.

On July 25, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Great update but everytime i try to download somthing it goes straight back to the homepage anytime soon its getting fixed

On July 25, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I cant download files. It just ops that link was incorrect, or error, or it just takes me back to the previous page. What the hell is wrong, I have files which I really need to get and I cant.

On July 26, 2010 at 2:48 am

The FTP login/pass for editor doesn’t work.

On July 26, 2010 at 4:30 am

at my forum we are having a tough time moderating all the posts about filefront links being broken. our members seem to all have the “redirect to main page” issues as described above. It has been quite a few days of this now. And ETA as to a fix? We are running out of things to say to members, and dont want to see a mass upload of files to other hosts and the subsequesnt pandemonium.

Ron Whitaker

On July 26, 2010 at 10:34 am

Hey all. Our tech team has been working through the weekend to address the issues that have popped up.

We hope to have fixes in place for all your issues this week. As we get more information, we’ll keep you updated.

You may notice that download speeds are much higher on the new system. That’s one of the bonuses to the migration we are currently running. Unfortunately, moving the enormous amount of data we host takes time, and it’s not a process we can speed up, as much as we would like to.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks for using FileFront.

Please fix this link, it doesnt seem to be working, http://www.filefront.com/13462130/CCC-Warhead-v3.00/ I click download and it just redirects me back to the news.filefront.com :( badly need this file… thanks!

Mark Burnham

On July 28, 2010 at 10:07 am

@Phillip Fain
Hey Philip. Downloading that file appears to be working for me now. Give it a shot. In the coming days this will be happening more and more. Files will gradually start coming back to life. Thanks again to everyone for their patience while we complete this big migration!

Mark Burnham

On July 28, 2010 at 10:15 am

Thank you for the feedback on our new design! We will definitely keep your points in mind for future releases (this is only FF 2.0). We want to make the navigation as simple as possible for our users, so we appreciate your suggestions. Also, I think that our current StarCraft II homepage takeover is possibly making things seem a little more overwhelming than they would otherwise.

Thanks again.

On July 28, 2010 at 12:56 pm

On July 28, 2010 at 2:04 pm

@Mark Burnham
Odd, it still doesnt work for me, I can see the download count risen so people can download it but I guess not me, in fact I cant download anything at all, what’s wrong? I also tried using proxies w/ no effect :/

Mark Burnham

On July 29, 2010 at 5:15 pm

@Phillip Fain
Hm, that is odd. We’ve tried it over here on a couple of different machines and it’s working fine. I would try and fully clear your cache, restart your browser and give it a shot again.

Phillip Fain

On July 29, 2010 at 7:47 pm

@Mark Burnham
Seems to me like an ISP problem, I got it to download in an internet cafe w/ no problems… I tried reseting the router, clearing the cache, restarting my browser @ home w/ no avail… Sigh stupid ISP…

On July 31, 2010 at 8:00 am

All of the FileFront network sites except for the forums and the main site, do not load for me.

Mark Burnham

On July 31, 2010 at 9:44 am

Interesting. Is it just a blank page?
I just gave it a shot, opened up about 10 random network sites and they all loaded just fine. Try clearing your cache/restarting your browser, or a different browser. Let us know if that works.

On July 31, 2010 at 10:58 am

I am having a problem downloading anything from filefront.
When i click on download, it opens to the thank you and quickly gets redirected to news.filefront.com.
I am stuck.

On July 31, 2010 at 11:02 am

And i have tried all the said suggestions.

Mark Burnham

On July 31, 2010 at 11:37 am

@Obaid and @Anon.
Sorry about this. It would help us if you could submit a support ticket for these issues. We’ll gather a bit more information from you and try and troubleshoot the problems.
Many thanks.

On July 31, 2010 at 4:50 pm

i love filefront

On August 1, 2010 at 4:44 am

Well I’ve submitted a ticket.
I DO want to it get start working.
I tried to download a file from a different oomputer, it download a mere 44KB compressed file and said it is completed. While the real file is some 243MB.

On August 2, 2010 at 10:23 am

Only real issue I’ve found thus far is Submitting Files on network sites, such as StarWarsBattlefront.filefront.com, doesn’t work. The upload.php however does, so no complaints there.

The sites look good, and I look forward to seeing the Network Site changes as well.

On August 3, 2010 at 9:10 pm

I’m downloading like never before. Filefront is now the best site on the web for DL. That’s it.

On August 5, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Congratulations FileFront on the newly, redesigned website. Cool!!!

Zedo Mann

On August 8, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Looks pretty, I’m sure I’ll be able to find everything I need.
Thinking of setting it as my homepage too.

Zedo Mann

On August 9, 2010 at 8:31 am

Hey, just a tip: Searching for Files or Games takes you back to the old Filefront.com rather than news.filefront.com.

Mark Burnham

On August 9, 2010 at 8:45 am

@Zedo Mann
That is actually by design. All of the old “legacy” filefront.com pages have not yet been redesigned, but they will be in the near future. If you’re looking for files, use the “Files” or “Games” search filters for now.
Thanks for the feedback!

On August 9, 2010 at 12:03 pm

are my files still up from the old filefront and if so how do i get to them?

Ron Whitaker

On August 9, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Any files you uploaded to your user account should still be there. Head over to this link (while signed in) to see any files on your account. http://www.filefront.com/managefiles.php

Please fix the bug where when ppl download files they are automatically linked to news.filefront.com I have tried on many different computer, cleared all of the offline data but it still doesn’t seem to work for me

On August 18, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Whenever I tried to download files, I always automatically linked to news.filefront.com. Couldn’t you fix this bug ASAP ? It’s very annoying and frustrating !

Ron Whitaker

On August 19, 2010 at 4:26 am

Game_Fan, this should only occur when you download a file that is no longer on our system. If you are having this happen on successful downloads, please head over to http://support.filefront.com and open a ticket. They should be able to help you get the issue resolved.

@URL, which ad in particular was it?
