Activision Blizzard Cannot Confirm A Diablo 3 2011 Release
Activision Blizzard hosted a conference call and webcast with the press to discuss the company’s financial performance, as well as their upcoming slate of releases. As you’d expect, they’re making so much money they could open their own bank, what with the success of WoW, StarCraft 2 and of course the neverending Call of Duty franchise. But naturally the game on everyone’s mind is Diablo 3.
Since news of the surprisingly controversial Diablo 3 Auction House opened the week, people have been punctuating their angry gasping about the possibility that people will be able to purchase in-game items with real life money with questions about when the hell the game is coming out. In today’s conference call, Activision Blizzard reps doused that fire a little bit with confirmation that Diablo 3′s release date is still up in the air. First up, this disclaimer that accompanied their earnings statement:
Since Blizzard Entertainment has not confirmed a launch date for its next global release, the company’s calendar year outlook at this time does not include a new game from Blizzard in 2011.
“Bububut,” you’re probably saying, “‘at this time’ doesn’t mean ‘not at all’, right?” Well that’s true Billy, but then Activision reps went and said this during the conference call:
We are still working hard to ship the game before the end of the year; however, we’re not ready to commit to a release date at this time.
That seems pretty decisive to me. Some of you might be crying, others might be glad the onset of the Auction House is delayed. Either way, looks like the release of Diablo 3 will be competing with Mass Effect 3, if not the Mayan holocaust itself. We’ll keep you posted.
