Age of Conan Presents: Women of Hyboria

Age of Conan Deadly LadyThe latest community update at the Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures official website discusses the women of Hyboria. While many may shrugg off the women of Hyboria as nothing more than scantly clad wenches, Funcom wants to break the mold by giving female players equal attributes beyond just physical beauty:

As some of you may have picked up during our development, we have chosen a somewhat updated view on women compared to the works of Robert E. Howard. The world circa-2007 is very different, in most places, than the 1930’s in which the original Conan stories came around. Early on in our development, we therefore made a very clear and conscious choice: Namely that any female player in Hyboria should be just as strong and able as any man! The strong, fierce and independent female is perfectly in line with the lore of Howard, however, we have expanded it to include ALL the female players. And seriously guys, you wouldn’t want anything else, now would you? (let the discussions start!)

To this extent, we have put an amazing amount of work into the female characters in the game, ranging from capturing some 2500 “female-only” animations to sets of special emotes to an incredible array of female clothing and armor. We haven’t just re-skinned male armor, but gone about to create something unique, something strong, something sexy, but at the same time avoiding making it tacky. Should you wish, you can naturally also wear nature’s own armor (but you cannot be completely naked inside the game). And, to underline the point stated above again; our goal has been to make any female player in Hyboria just as strong and able as any man!

I’m pretty sure Robert E. Howard only saw women equal to Conan in more rare numbers. Nonetheless, for an MMO of this nature to work there has to be a little bit of leeway. I for one think that if I’m going to be investing a lot of time staring at a screen for hours, I’d rather see something that visually appeals to me (and big hulking men just don’t do it for me). So bring on the women, ugly or not.

They made the world shattering decision to give female players the same stats as male players, and also make them hot? Wow. How groundbreaking. Surely, that has never been done be… Oh wait. Every MMO ever, you say? Well damn.

So how exactly is this news at all? Seems like just an excuse to post some renderings of bootylicious female characters.

Howard must be spinning so fast down there that he is soon to be achieving lift.

I prefer playing a female character in nearly every game I play, so I’m happy to see I won’t be at a major disadvantage if I decide to play Age of Conan.

Not seeing a lot that jumped out at me about this game; it seems like nothing special with a Conan face.

Kinda annoys me how there’s “pretty women” but not “pretty men”. Also no “Enormously Buff, Strong women” or whatever.

Yeah man, we’re totally down with feminism! We even let the women have the same stats as the men! I actually knew a guy in college who tried to give all female characters a physical stat penalty when we were playing D&D, and claimed that the ability to give birth (which somehow never came up in his campaign) was the balancing factor. Considering half the group was made up of female players, this didn’t go over too well…

Handshakes is right, this is standard for every MMO; you’re not punished for playing a woman per se, but it’s clear from the get-go how important it is that you be pretty, whereas for guys it’s a non-issue. Frankly “female clothing and armor” reminds me of WoW, where my gnome warrior is wearing a full plate bikini half the time. I’m playing this game because I want to have fun, not because I want to dress up and look pretty for the boys!

Both of you are right about stats being standard, but what is not standard is the 1000+ female only animation and also all the female only armor. Not just male armor re-skinned. Plus the women can actually be hot and not look like men like so many other MMO’s
