Age of Empires Online Stops Active Development

For those wanted to keep crunching through new content in Age of Empires Online (all two of you), today will be a disappointment. Gas Powered Games has announced that active development is ceasing on the MMORTS, and that no new civilizations or features will be introduced from here on out. Why? The game simply isn’t profitable enough.

That isn’t to say that AOEO will be completely unsupported. Customer service will still handle issues, small content updates are planned for the coming months, and there will no doubt be new community events and interactions. But if you want to play a Roman civilization, or fiddle around with some new features, you’re going to be out of luck unless the game takes off in a big way down the line. It’s a shame; AOEO is a solid and enjoyable classic-styled RTS and it deserved a larger audience than it got, even if the cash shop was a little irritating.

Well, crap. And I just started playing it. I really enjoy it, but maybe they should have made it more appealing to people who like bloody, realistic history instead of trying to market it to ten-year-olds. Seems most developers these days have no idea who their audience is. I of course mean the frat boys who are so totally going to play Bioshock Infinite.
