AMD’s FX-9590: 5 GHz and 200W

AMD took the wraps off its latest enthusiast CPU, the FX-9590. Clocked at 5 GHz, the FX-9590 is the new flagship CPU for AMD, and it will hit retailers at some point next month.

Still based on the Piledriver arcitecture, the FX-9590 has one big differentiator between it and the older 8000 series parts: a TDP of 200W. AMD confirmed to us in a briefing that the FX-9590 needs 200W, a sizable bump over the 125W required of the current FX-8000 series CPUs.

The stock clock speed boost makes this the fastest CPU (in terms of clocks alone) in the world right now. And we can only imagine what overclockers will do with this part — time travel might finally be achieved.
