American's Love Street Fighter IV's Abel; Capcom Confused

The upcoming Street Fighter IV will feature four brand spankin’ new characters: masked Mexican wrestler El Fuerte, pink-haired spy gal Crimson Viper, Frenchman Abel, and finally, fat bastard Rufus. But out of all these, it seems Americans prefer playing as Abel, according to the game‘s producer, Yoshinori Ono, who observed players at this past Comic-Con. That’s all well and good, except the developers were fully expecting Crimson Viper to be the favorite newcomer for Americans:

“With all due to respect to him, he’s a great character, but honestly we thought Crimson Viper would be a big hit here,” said Ono. “We got a lot of marketing data and a lot of advice from our US branch in creating that character. She was kind of custom tailored for the States and we thought people would like her…What we need to do now is find out what his [Abel's] deal is, why they like him and use that information going forward.”

That is strange that most people would choose to play as Abel over those other colorful characters. Is it due to his roguish good looks and “can do” attitude? Or is it because he’s the only one who actually looks like a fighter and not some ridiculous caricature? Hmm… (And what? No love for Rufus and his creeping crotch fuzz? Seriously, what demographic is that supposed to appeal to?)

My unfounded guess is that Abel appears to be a MMA fighter thus appealing to the rapidly growing fanbase in the states.

C’mon! Since when did Americans prefer extravagant looking, high-tech secretaries with obscene hairdos? If anything, Crimson Viper screams King of Fighters (looks like a mix of Iori, Vice/Mature, and King). The game looks great, but some of these new characters look downright silly.
