Analyst: Diablo 3 Will Sell 5 Million Copies First Year
Now that the mystery of Diablo 3′s release date has been solved – hint: it’s May 15 – we can start wildly speculating about the really important stuff. Like how much of a hit will it be? We obviously know people are going to buy it. But will it be a lot of people, or a hell of a lot of people? If analysts’ predictions turn out to be accurate, then the answer is pretty close to a hell.
Cowen & Company, last seen predicting that EA blew 500 million on SWTOR, have weighed in on the future of Diablo 3, and it seems it is bright. They’re predicting 5 million people will snatch it up in its first year alone. About 1/5 of that will come from people who access the game free by purchasing a WoW annual pass, but even 4 million cold sales is pretty amazing.
And incidentally, if you were wondering whether or not Blizzard’s recent behavior indicates poor tidings, you might be able to stop. Cowen & Co. say Activision Blizzard shares rate as ‘Outperform’ thanks to the upcoming slate of games. So rest assured, WoW fans, you’ll be serviced for years to come. Assuming, of course, that these predictions don’t end up falling short, or that something awful, like the Mayan apocalypse, ends up happening this year.
