Anarchy Online – Phishing Scam

phishing2_1.JPGFuncom has sent out a notice warning gamers of a new phishing site scam being mailed around under the guise of Anarchy Online. As someone who works officially in the information security business, I feel this is extremely important message to get out.

We’ve just been made aware that there’s a rather sophisticated phishing site being emailed around.

We are not running any quizzes (or anything of that nature) for Paid Points or any other rewards, and you should be extremely suspicious about entering account info in any sites of that nature. The phishing sites can be extremely sophisticated, so please double and triple-check the URL and be wary of clicking any emailed links.

For those of you naive or lucky enough not to know what phishing is, it’s a scam designed to steal your personal account information through email or IMs by a criminal entity attempting to pass itself off as a business or some other organization you trust; in this case Anarchy Online. eBay, PayPal and online banks are all examples of companies that make good phishing targets because of course you’ll verify your password and account number for your bank, right?.

Always check the fine print. The first clue would be; you get an alarming email that someone has been illegally accessing your account from Watchovia Bank when you’re a Fifth Third customer.

Don’t ever give your usernames, passwords, credit card or account information out online.
