Anita Sarkeesian “Staying With Friends” After Threats
Anita Sarkeesian, the creator of Tropes vs. Women in Games, had to contact police authorities after receiving “scary threats.”
Sarkeesian reported these threats on the Twitter account for Femenist Frequency, the video web series she created and hosts. The threats were preceded by the release of a new episode of Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, a series that Sarkeesian crowdfunded via Kickstarter back in 2012. The new episode was entitled “Women as Background Decorations” and dealt with the tendency of games to treat women as “sexual playthings” as well as “perpetual victims of male violence.”
While Sarkeesian has received a good heaping of praise for her work in this second video, many male gamers have also come at her with disdain and threats, the latter of which apparently became so bad that she felt the need to contact police and even vacated her home.
Sarkeesian would go on to share a screen capture of a series of threats that struck her as more disturbing than the usual diatribe she receives. Be warned that it is, in fact, on the upsetting side of things.
