APB Reloaded Open Beta Is Live
All Points Bulletin was an idea that sounded good – GTA re-imagined as an MMO in which players could be either cops or robbers. It debuted at E3 2010 with much promotion and should have been one of the big games of the year. Except… it kind of sucked so much no one wanted to play it. Roundly criticized for being laggy, boring, kind of sexist, and too heavy with the character customization and not heavy enough on the actual fun content , it was also sort of expensive and required a ridiculously top-of-the-line computer to even get the bare minimum play out of it. Predictably, shutting the vast majority of PC gamers out while boring to death the ones who could play proved a bad business model. Within a a couple of months of the game‘s launch, developing studio Realtime Worlds was driven out of business and the game ceased as of November, 2010.
However, just because the execution sucked didn’t mean the concept did, and K2 Network purchased the rights to the property from what remained of Realtime Worlds and announced plans to relaunch the game as an F2P MMO retitled APB: Reloaded. Since then they’ve kept players updated via their Facebook page.
Today the question of whether or not it was even possible to make a good APB game can begin to be answered. The open beta of APB Reloaded has started, and you can download everything you need to get started here. Word of warning: It’s still going to require a recent computer, but at least the game is free.
