Army of Darkness Castle Defense Taking a Boomstick to iPhone
You may not know you need this, but Backflip Studios — the guys responsible for Paper Toss, among other things — is creating a castle defense game for iPhone based on the castle defense scene from near the end of Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi’s third and most ridiculous entry into the Evil Dead franchise.
I’m a big Evil Dead fan, and a bigger fan of Bruce Campbell, the franchise’s star, but Army of Darkness doens’t really do it for me; Raimi pushes too far toward the hoaky. But that said, the scene with the skeletal deadites storming the humans’ refuge seems like it could make a decent castle defense-type game. If we need more of those.
Anyway, you control Ash/Bruce Campbell and his shotgun and chainsaw-hand prosthetic, and as you kill enemies, you gather up gold coins that can be spent hiring soldiers and mercenaries. You start on the left side of the screen, where your castle is, and move to the right on the 2D plane. Enemies are trying to get all the way to the left and take over your castle, and you defend it. There are 50 levels and the game includes audio of Ash delivering the kind of one-liners that have turned Army of Darkness into a cult classic — which is great news. Hopefully it’s original audio and not any kind of re-recordings, because if it’s not Bruce Campbell, I’m not buying this game.
If you don’t know Army of Darkness and Evil Dead, shame on you. Here’s a quick rundown: Ash is a convenience store employee whose friends go with him to a cabin, where they find an audio recording of a translation of a book — the Necronomicon. It’s an evil book, and playing the translation releases the evil. Ash gets sent back in time and has to fight demons in the Middle Ages, using only his chainsaw prosthetic (acquired in Evil Dead 2 after his hand got infected with evil), his shotgun and his Buick.
The game is due out in April.
