Assassin’s Creed 3 Looks To Have Ubisoft’s Biggest-Ever Preorders
We know that Assassin’s Creed has been a goldmine for Ubisoft. Why else would they keep churning games out on a yearly basis? But it seems even with that kind of glut, the sky is literally the limit for the franchise, as interest in Assassin’s Creed 3, the first proper continuation of the story since 2009, is fevered. How much so? It’s breaking Ubisoft preorder records.
In a press release sent out today, the developer crowed about the fact that preorders for AC3 have beat all previous games in the series for the same time period. It has already reached the total number of preorders Brotherhood did for it’s entire lifespan. Not a surprise, considering the audience grows with each game, but they’re predicting it will top all over Ubisoft titles, beating out Assassin’s Creed Revelation, or at least, matching it.
Of course, preorders do not = sales, so take this as the bit of craven hype-management that it is. Even so, it’s kind of cool that games dripping with so many history nerd fetishes have managed to become so popular. They may not make sense, and they might be mostly climbing and killing, but there’s a lot of smart put into them, and I approve.
Here’s the full press release. Read at your own risk (of boredom from corporate boilerplate).
SAN FRANCISCO – MARCH 29, 2012 – Ubisoft(r) announced today that Assassin’s Creed(r) III, releasing on October 30, 2012 in North America, is on track to become the highest pre-ordered game in the company’s history.
After only three weeks of the game being available for pre-order in North America, Assassin’s Creed III has made history for Ubisoft in North America with reserves for the title being higher than any previous Assassin’s Creed game in the same time period. Assassin’s Creed III has more than 10 times the U.S. pre-order total that Assassin’s Creed Revelations had in the same time period, and the game has already reached Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood’s life-to-date U.S. pre-order total. Assassin’s Creed III is on track to match the life-to-date U.S. pre-order figures for Ubisoft’s previously most pre-ordered game, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, by E3 in June.
“On October 30th players will experience the biggest game launch in Ubisoft’s history with the highly anticipated release of Assassins Creed III,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Ubisoft. “With a development cycle of three years, Assassins Creed III is the true next-generation experience of the Assassins Creed brand. The production value of the game, combined with the biggest marketing commitment we’ve ever made, will make Assassins Creed III the highest-selling Assassin’s Creed game ever. Additionally, the new setting and hero makes this the perfect time to jump into the series for anyone that has not previously played an Assassin’s Creed game.”
Assassin’s Creed III, the fifth installment of the acclaimed series, will be available on the Xbox 360(r) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation(r)3 computer entertainment system, the Wii U(tm) and Windows PC. The game is being developed by the veteran Assassin’s Creed team in Ubisoft Montreal with support from other Ubisoft studios.
