Assassin's Creed Series May Be On Hold Until 2012

First you won’t be playing Assassin’s Creed with a friend; now you might not be playing it at all in 2011.

Despite rolling out Assassin’s Creed games all over the place since the release of the first back in 2007, at least one person responsible for the series thinks a year off will do it some good.

That is, after Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood shows up on Nov. 16.

Series associate producer Jean-Francois Boivin told Eurogamer in an interview that he’s worried about over-saturating the market, much in the way the glut of Guitar Hero and Rock Band games are diminishing interest in music game as a whole.

“You want to keep people excited,” Boivin said in the interview. “You gotta make people miss it a bit. It’s like, ,Oh man! I’m so happy it’s back!’ But if you keep force-feeding to people then people are like, ,Yeah, enough of your Assassin’s Creed.’”

Not a bad idea, considering the Assassin’s Creed rollout: Assassin’s Creed for Xbox 360, PC and PS3 in 2007; Altair’s Chronicles for Nintendo DS and the iPhone in 2008; Bloodlines for PSP, Assassin’s Creed II (360, PS3, PC), and Assassin’s Creed II: Discovery (DS, iPhone) in 2009; Brotherhood (360, PS3, PC) in November; and a Nintendo 3DS title called Lost Legacy whose release date hasn’t been divulged yet.

And the series isn’t over and there’s at least the Assassin’s Creed III installment on the horizon.

Either way, slowing down the release of games isn’t exactly Boivin’s call.

“Bottom line, it’s not for me to say,” he said. “We have some business people that will eventually put a date and say ,This needs to come out.’ We have our creative people, who are also pushing on their end, saying ,We need this much time to do something new and refreshing, just scope-wise.’ So I don’t know how much time we’ll need.”
