Awesomeness: Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall of the Samurai Debut Trailer

All of you reading this need to pick up the Asian Saga by James Clavell – specifically, Shogun, which covers the (lightly fictionalized) rise of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1600, and Gai-Jin, which deals with its end. Reading both of these books will put you in the right mindset to play Total War: Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai.

Though the main Shogun 2 campaign is set during the Orin war (which caused the century-long warring states period), Fall of the Samurai is set during the so-called Meiji Restoration, so expect plenty of guns and Samurai dying in droves. Here’s the trailer:

If you’re interested, the Samurai system was jettisoned because the Samurai were incompetent when it came to dealing effectively with the American and British traders who had finally begun to force Japan to trade after more than 2 centuries of isolation. The Samurai system was replaced by a constitutional monarchy and modernized military both of which were based on Prussia. This laid the groundwork for the staggering success of the Empire of Japan, which conquered most of Asia until it was defeated during World War II. And now you know the rest of the story!

Anyway, Fall of the Samurai launches in March, 2012.
