Batman: Arkham Origins Multiplayer Mode Unveiled
Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment has revealed today the multiplayer mode for Batman: Arkham Origins, a game which we previewed here. The previous games in the Arkham series did not have multiplayer, making Batman: Arkham Origins the first in the series to have it as a component.
Developed by Splash Damage, the makers of Brink and Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, Batman: Arkham Origins online component will see rival gangs, including the Joker and his henchmen, vie for control of Gotham in three vs. three encounters. It comes with a twist: there is a third team of players consists of two members: Batman and Robin.
“We were all very passionate about the fact that this shouldn’t be a “me too” mode or a tacked-on mode,” Splash Damage’s creative director Alastair Cornish said in an interview with OXM, which has written up a hands-on preview. “It had to be distinct, it had to be uniquely Arkham, and it had to feel like a natural growth of the single player experience.”
The game’s multiplayer mode is being billed as an evolution of the Predator Challenges—or horde mode—found in the previous games in the series.
“I almost think of it as like the challenge rooms: if you liked some aspect, you can come on and extend your experience, and multiplayer – particularly one based on the invisible predator experience – feels like that natural extension. It feels like, “Ok, I want to challenge myself against the best AI in the world – other players – who are unpredictable as all hell and can work together and use their ingenuity,” explained Cornish.
Batman: Arkham Origins is set for release on the 25th of October for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. Arkham Origins: Blackgate, a spin-off, will also be released on the same day for PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS.
