Batman Meets Dishonored in First Shadow of Mordor Gameplay Trailer

I’m still not swayed that Shadow of Mordor fits within the established Midde-earth lore, but holy hell does Monolith’s dip into the Lord of the Rings universe look fun.

In the first gameplay trailer for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, the devs do a bang-up job of demonstrating a key feature that makes it truly unique: the Nemesis System. Every single bad guy that protagonist Talion faces will remember their encounter with him, and based on the outcome, act accordingly when met later in the game. That very clever feature becomes a critical gameplay mechanic due to Talion’s wraith powers. They bring a number of abilities, including the power  to make an enemy your own personal minion. Send that newly minted servant out into the open world, and he’ll do your bidding — including assassinations.

See how Nemesis works, and its profound impact on gameplay, in the trailer below:

I’m doing my Emperor Palpatine right now: most impressive. The Nemesis System looks like terrific fun to toy with, and as for the gameplay as a whole, Monolith wasn’t kidding when they said they were influenced by the Batman: Arkham franchise. Which is just fine with me, because the Batman games are amazing.

I’d add another influence to Shadow of Mordor: Dishonored. The wraith powers remind me very much of the dark magic wielded in Dishonored. Combine that with the elegant attack/combo system from Batman: Arkham, and you’ve got a personal dream game. Can’t wait to go hands on with this one.

The game looks cool in a lot of areas, but combat looks a bit dull, shallow, and in need of some polish.

Doesn’t look too bad a game to play lot of fun to be had, seems to be following a pattern of most of these types of games has a few ideas but seems limited. The graphics are exceptional, 10/10 for all that work.

It doesn’t look very original or innovative.

Does it look interesting? Of course, but I’d always want to play Assassin’s Creed meets The Witcher.
