Battlefield 3 Tournament will Have a 1.6 Million Dollar Prize Pool
In what appears to be a blatant attempt to one-up the million dollar Modern Warfare 3 tournament, Virgin Gaming will host the Battlefield 3 Worldwide Conquest Tournament. The announcement was made by none other than Richard Branson, the billionaire CEO of Virgin Group. Branson will use the tournament to promote his Virgin Gaming website. Aside from having sponsored tournaments, Virgin Gaming will also allow players to put in their own cash and bet against others in head to head games.
According to Branson, this event will be the “largest video game tournament in history.” With a prize pool of 1.6 mil, it will certainly be the most expensive. I suppose that kind of money is pocket change to a guy like Branson though. And because he felt like splurging, players who make it to finals will be flown to an unknown exotic location to compete for first prize. Branson says the location is “so brilliant, I may even be there.” I bet wherever it is has waterfalls and drinks served in coconuts.
And now for the bad news, the tournament is for console players only. That’s right, apparently no one told Branson that PC gaming is making a comeback. If I had to guess, I’d say PC gamers have been showing their outrage through the dislike button on Branson’s Youtube announcement video. It’s either that, or there’s a lot of Modern Warfare 3 fans that don’t like to see BF3 players winning big money.
Even with the horrible misstep of not including PC gamers in the tournament, I still think this is a huge milestone for pro gaming. I love following these events, and having two giant franchises competing with each other makes the stakes higher and the games more exciting. I can’t wait to see who the new kings of BF3 will be.
