Battlefield 3 Won’t Quite Run at 720p on Consoles

DICE’s Johan Andersson has tweeted that Battlefield 3 won’t quite run at 720 on consoles, but it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to notice:

#bf3 is 1280×704 on both PS3 and 360. removing a few lines from 720p saves good perf & memory for us

That seems like a weird resolution. He explained:

we have tiny 8 pixel black bars that often is invisible due to overscan, scaling would just ruin the picture

So that’s not so bad. They removed 16 lines in order to improve performance, and you won’t even be able to tell because your TV usually obscures the edges of the picture anyway. And, in any case, Modern Warfare 3 will probably run at some lower resolution, as was the case with Black Ops. On the other hand, MW3 will probably run at a higher framerate…

Yeah, my system is about the same as yours, so I’m right there with you in the hoping.

Video card wise it hasn’t been hugely demanding of my PC during the testing phases. They must be having a hard time finding areas of the physics engine to cut corners on, typically that’s where consoles cheat.

Yea, these 560′s and 570′s are still bottle-necking the cpu’s. You got no worries.
