Battlestar Galactica Coming Soon to a Galaxy Near You

Coming soon to the PC and Xbox Live Arcade is Battlestar Galactica sans Dirk Benedict as our favorite ladies man Lt. Starbuck. Ah….. the good ole days of 70′s era television just flashed before my eyes when I saw the trailer and screens for this new game from Sierra Online. Not only did it bring back childhood memories of my crush on Lt. Starbuck, I also got a little misty-eyed as I remembered my handheld Battlestar Galactica ‘Space Alert’ battery operated game from Mattel – which by the way still works great even if the sound does drag a little. But this post is not suppose to be trip down memory lane, it is suppose to give you a bit of information regarding the new game from Sierra, so without further ado, here we go.

Inspired by the newest version of the series airing on the SCI FI Channel, Battlestar Galactica will be available sometime this fall. No official set date has been given, so just check back often for more information. For the time being, fans of the series can download themepacks and other assets from the show on Xbox Live Marketplace.

“We’re huge fans of Battlestar Galactica and are thrilled to have the opportunity to create a game inspired by the TV series,” said Ed Zobrist, president of Sierra Online. “NBC Universal is working closely with us so that players will be able immerse themselves in the Battlestar Galactica universe and re-live their favorite missions from the TV series.”

Developed by Australian-based Auran Games, the game will feature both single-player and multiplayer modes and allow the player to take part in space battles as a pilot for either the humans or Cylon forces. Ships from the television show will be featured as well as missions based on favorite episodes.

The popular TV series has received rave reviews from the press. Entertainment Weekly said “Battlestar Galactica is TV’s next great cult hit” and Variety said “Battlestar Galactica achieves what only the best science fiction can…”

We’ll see what everyone says about the game once it is released, but until then enjoy the screens and and if you want to see more assets, there are two more brand new gameplay trailers here and here. Check out the game synopsis along with features after the break.

Set 40 years before the events of the television series, the Battlestar Galactica game tells the story of a young Ensign William Adama in his first assignment aboard the Galactica. As the young hero, players will have to turn the tide against an overwhelming Cylon fleet as they tangle with swarms of fighters in frenetic space combat over a series of story driven missions ranging from search and destroy and escort sorties to infiltration and reconnaissance operations. To help tip the scales in their favor, players will be able to take control of five different ships including a Colonial heavy bomber and a Cylon Raider, each with their own unique flight models and weapons loadouts.

  • Single-Player Campaign – Pilot various ships and complete memorable missions from the TV series.
  • Multiplayer Game Mode – Play online with 8 players in this relentless space-based action shooter in Firefight, Skirmish and Domination modes.
  • Legendary Spaceships – Fly 4 Human and 4 Cylon ships from the Viper II to the Cylon Raider, each with unique weapon capabilities.
  • Special Weapons – Coordinate attacks with a gallery of destructive weapons including the missiles, guns and more.
  • Realistic Effects – Full 3D graphics to show off the detailed ships and cosmic environment.
  • Defensive Maneuvers – Avoid annihilation with the barrel roll, quick turnabouts and other aerial moves.
