Beaver Claims ‘Worst Writing in Games’ Quote ‘Out of Context’

Last week, Dead Space Story Producer Chuck Beaver told The Beat he thought Gears of War had “literally the worst writing in games.” This week, Beaver is in damage control mode and claims the quote was taken out of context.

Beaver released a statement that was posted on IGN after The Beat, which is an Electronic Arts news blog, by the way, pulled the interview and scrubbed it from the Internet.

“I just wanted to jump in and clarify some of my comments that were taken out of context about Gears of War” he said. “First, let me say that I’m a huge fan. It is an epic franchise that has trail-blazed more than a few industry-leading player experiences and mechanics.

“It is deservedly recognized as a top-tier title. Its success as a property is evidenced by its giant sales and rabid fan base. The industry is far better for Epic’s contributions, and we all owe a great deal of inspiration to their work.”

Undoubtedly, EA and Beaver got caught with egg on their faces over his statements, and PR spin is being used to clean up the resulting mess. But I can’t say I believe that Beaver was somehow “taken out of context,” given that The Beat is EA’s PR mouthpiece, for one. And second, the “Breaking Into The Industry” interviews the blog does with EA employees, of which Beaver’s interview was one, are done in a straight Q&A format. There’s literally no way he was taken out of context, barring a crazed writer reordering words with psychotic glee and malicious, anti-Beaver intent. Which I highly doubt.

Can’t help but wonder if Beaver’s faux pas cost some Beat writer a job, though.

Thanks, CVG.

Well, Gears’ writing is kind of hilarious…
