Beowulf – Information Update from Ubisoft

beowulfBack in May, gamers everywhere were reveling in the mass of information coming from Ubidays. One of the many announcements made was a game tie-in to the movie Beowulf, which is coming to theaters this November. Today, Ubisoft has released a trailer and some screens for this third-person hack and slash, which will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. No official word on the exact release date, but as we are all aware, games that are movie tie-ins usually come out in conjunction with the film.

Like most gamers in general, I am a bit wary of titles based upon films and vise versa – I think that if Ubisoft were to stay closer to the literary story of Beowulf and as far away from the Hollywood version as possible, it would make for a great premise. That being said, I am not letting my admiration of Ubisoft cause me to be biased when saying how impressed I am so far with what I have seen. Granted, what else can be done with the hack and slash genre that hasn’t already been done, but this title has a bit more grit than what I have seen or played in a while. Imagine your typical Nordic warrior or what Erik the Red would have looked like and you have the hero Beowulf. He looks mean, strong, noble, and he can rip heads off of monkey-men in a single bound. This main character actually looks like he would be fun to play, and the enemies and monsters he comes across are not your typical demoniods – these look really evil and acrobatic, so having a small regiment of soldiers to help you on your quest is essential. The environment is totally uninviting and brutal with some of the obstacles looking a bit foreboding. After watching this trailer, one almost forgets that it is connected to a film entirely – and personally I cannot wait to get my hands on this game.

If you are unfamiliar with the story of Beowulf, check out our previous post on the game. We have some screens, and a trailer to enjoy as well – unfortunately you have to show us your ID to view the trailer, but we all have to obey the rules sometimes even if they seem unfair. Check back with us often as November approaches – I am sure the wonderful folks at Ubisoft will be handing out more goodies in the near future.
