Best Video Card for Diablo 3

If you haven’t upgraded your computer since your Diablo 2 days, you may be looking for a new graphics card for Diablo 3 — and you may also be wondering which to buy.

A solid CPU and sufficient RAM are integral parts of a gaming rig, and even a top-of-the-line graphics card can have its performance bottle-necked if you skimp out on those components, but for our purposes here, we’re considering the gamer who is only looking to upgrade his GPU.

Diablo 3 is designed to run on older systems, so the good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to run the game on max settings. Here’s a look at some of the cards you may find yourself considering, sorted by Newegg price, and our suggestions on which to opt for.

Diablo 3 Graphics Card Specifications

Minimum: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT or ATI Radeon X1950 Pro or better

Recommended: NVIDIA GeForce 260 or ATI Radeon HD 4870 or better

The following cards meet Diablo 3′s minimum system requirements.

$50: If you’re really strapped for cash, the GeForce GT 430 is the least expensive option we can recommend. But if you can swing it, spend another $10 to go with the next card.

$60: Benchmarks show the Radeon HD 6570 performing better enough than the GT 430 to justify its higher price tag. But if you’re looking for an NVIDIA alternative, then for $5 more, you can get the next option.

$65: The GeForce GT 440 delivers similar performance to the HD 6570. However, none of these cards have great performance-to-cost ratios; to get more bang for your buck, you’ll need to spend a little more.

$70: The Radeon HD 6670 sees a significant performance improvement over the GT 440 for only $5 more. This is the sweet spot for cards that meet Diablo 3′s minimum requirements — not too expensive, and more than capable of running the game.

$90: A $20 leap from the HD 6670, the Radeon HD 6750 does show a marked improvement, but now we’re approaching Diablo 3′s recommended system specifications. If you’re willing to buy the HD 6750, then you may as well spend $20 more for the next option.

The following cards meet Diablo 3′s recommended system requirements.

$110: There’s considerable debate over whether the Radeon HD 7750 is superior to the Radeon HD 6770, and both happen to be available for the same price presently. At the very least, their performance is comparable and they are both solid cards.

$120: The GeForce GTX 550 Ti is a step above the $110 options, but AMD comes out to play with an identically-priced card that outperforms the GTX 550 Ti: the Radeon HD 6790. For only a $10 difference in price, the the HD 6790 also delivers more bang for your buck than the $110 options.

$140: The next performance jump takes us to the GeForce GTX 460, but again, the AMD alternative beats it for the same price and has the best performance-to-cost ratio of any other card on this list: the Radeon HD 6850.

$160: For $20 more, the Radeon HD 6870 squeaks out a few more frames per second over the HD 6850, but doesn’t match the card’s performance-to-cost ratio.

$170: The GeForce GTX 560 is, arguably, as powerful as the $140 Radeon HD 6850, but we present it in the interest of giving equal representation to NVIDIA cards.

Which to buy?

The best video card for Diablo 3 will vary depending on your needs and what you value more. If you want our least expensive recommendation, go with the GeForce GT 430. If you’re looking for the best value out of a card while spending less than $100, go with the Radeon HD 6670.

If you want to comfortably meet Diablo 3′s recommended system requirements and run the game on max settings for the lowest price, the Radeon HD 6790 is the way to go. If you don’t mind a greater investment to get more for your money, you can’t go wrong with the Radeon HD 6850, and you’d rather the NVIDIA alternative, then you can grab the GeForce GTX 560.

Note: We have not run full benchmarks on these cards nor reviewed them separately in an official capacity. This article is intended as a consumer’s guide to help make a purchasing decision easier. Prices can change on a daily basis, and we recommend consumers do their research before making a purchase.
