Bethesda ‘Explains’ Why Prey 2 Was Removed From Website
In March, rumors abounded that Bethesda had killed Prey 2. Those rumors were fueled in part by the near-last minute cancellation of the Prey 2 team’s appearance at GDC. Not helping matters, Bethesda took nearly a month to officially comment, stating in April that it wasn’t dead, only sleeping until an unspecified future date. Alas, it appears Prey 2 might in fact be dead after all, because it’s been removed entirely from Bethesda’s official site.
What’s up with that, you ask? Eurogamer spoke to a Bethesda rep, who told them “We announced the delay in April, and until we’re ready to talk about the game more, the focus on the site is on our upcoming titles.” That’s not really much of an answer if you ask me. No, it’s not a cancellation notice, but it’s also not exactly a vote of no confidence. It’s almost assured that Prey 2 won’t be out in 2013, and the longer things take the less likely people are to care when the game finally comes out. I wouldn’t be shocked if it ends up being cancelled outright, especially when Elder Scrolls online inevitably fails* and Bethesda freaks out about money.
*Yeah, I said it. I have ZERO confidence an MMO based on the Elder Scrolls-iverse will thrive. Not because the Elder Scrolls series isn’t The Best, but because people are really burning out on MMOs as it is, and a game with the kind of lore, story, and play variety an Elder Scrolls game will need is going to cost WAAAY more than any F2P budget can handle. But I’m happy to be proved wrong.
