Bethesda Hasn’t Cancelled Prey 2, Dev Says
Poor Prey 2. Being on the Prey 2 team must be a lot like dating a celebrity who gets photographed canoodling with someone else and is asked if their relationship with you is over before they’ve had a chance to call and talk about it. Earlier this year they abruptly pulled out of GDC without explanation, and it took Bethesda more than a month, during which rumors abounded, to finally clarify that they weren’t canceling the game. Whew! Except a few months later, Prey 2 was unceremoniously removed from the official list of upcoming games on Bethesda’s site.
Bethesda’s rather tepid explanation for doing so – “We announced the delay in April, and until we’re ready to talk about the game more, the focus on the site is on our upcoming titles.” – was more like a jumbled word salad than an actual explanation, and frankly it sounds to me like the company is giving up on the game. And after Peter Hines an interview Peter Hines gave to IGN NL, it seemed more certain than ever this was indeed the case.
The article quoted him as saying “I can be very clear about this. At one point, we looked at Prey 2 and decided that in its current state, with all the money, time, and resources we put into it, it didn’t meet our expectations. So we decided to pull the plug from our end.” That sounds like ‘dunzo’ to me. Except, it turns out Hines was misquoted. He explained everything on Twitter:
To clarify, I didn’t say Prey 2 was canx. Gave an interview in English, translated to Dutch, translated back to English. #LostInTranslation
He quickly added that he “simply reiterated what we’ve said previously, which is that it’s not coming out this year.” Ok then. Personally, I think it’s not coming out ever. These delays, which will push the game well into the next generation, will also push it into the period after Elder Scrolls Online flops.
