Beyond Good & Evil 2 May Be Beyond Hope
Without question of the most unique (and fun) games of 2003 was Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil. The action-adventure title combined puzzles, stealth, and a futuristic setting into a great package.
Michael Ancel, creator of the Rayman series, was behind Beyond Good & Evil, and I was thrilled to hear in 2008 that they were developing a sequel. However, this morning’s news may quell all my excitement.
A translation of French site Woot Gaming reveals the rumor that Ancel has left Ubisoft Montpelier in order to create a studio of his own, and that he is taking another unnamed, “well-known” developer with him.
It seems that Ancel wants to pursue more “classical 2D games”,” although he still wants to publish under the Ubisoft label. That seems a bit strange to me, as he appears to have left the studio, but we’ll see how it shakes out.
While all of this is still unconfirmed, this could spell big trouble for the sequel that is currently in the works at Ubisoft.
