BioWare Says Shepard’s Story Ends in Mass Effect 3
There might be more Mass Effect games and stories on the horizon from BioWare, but at least for right now, the developer is saying they won’t be about Commander Shepard.
BioWare’s Mike Gamble has said that there are further plans for Mass Effect — after all, it has a ridiculously huge universe to exploit (and they better do it since I spent so much time reading that goddamn in-game codex) — but Mass Effect 3 is the end of Commander Shepard’s story arc, according to a story from PC World.
“Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things,” Gamble said. “A thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we’d provide for Commander Shepard, but it’s also … an entry point for new fans and … a brand new beginning.”
“After this, Commander Shepard’s story is complete,” he said.
To be honest, I’m kind of hoping that means Shepard goes out in a blaze of glory. It’d be something of a weak conclusion if he flies off in the Normandy into some Skillian Verge sunset, or retires on Eden Prime and helps rebuild a colony or something. Although it’d be cool to maybe find Shepard a few years down the line, washed up and booze-addled or riding around with some massive injuries all Captain Pike-style. I might be excited about receiving missions from Rear Admiral Shepard at some future date, although if he’s not going to die, I think I’d prefer Shepard to end up all evil like Big Boss.
