Black Mesa is Live, Download it Here!

Without question, Black Mesa is one of the most anticipated mods in years. Originally known as Black mesa: Source (they removed the ‘Source’ at Valve’s request), it began when the teams from two other mods: Leakfree and the Half-Life: Source Overhaul Project, merged to form one super-powerful mod team. Since then, they’ve been working hard at bringing Half-Life over into a much prettier package. It was originally based on the first Source engine, but now uses the 2007 version released with the Orange Box.

Watch Mitchell compare the remake with the original. Find even more videos like this on the Game Front Youtube Channel.

After all these years, Black Mesa is finally upon us. So, what do you need to play it?

  1. The 2007 Source SDK. You can install this from the Library > Tools menu in Steam. Alternatively, you can just click click this link.
  2. The Black Mesa mod. Where can you get that? Right here on Game Front. There are three files you need to grab, an installer, an archive, and the MD5 file. Hit the download links below, and get busy playing!!

Black Mesa Installation Troubleshooting Tips

  • Verify that the blackmesa.7z and setup.exe files you downloaded are intact, by checking their MD5 hashes. Use this program to do that. Instructions on how to use it are down in the comment section.
  • After downloading, put all 3 files in a single folder, and run the setup.exe file. No need to extract the .7z beforehand. The setup process will do that for you automatically.
  • If you’re hitting a 502 bad gateway error while trying to open the file pages on Game Front, CTRL+F5 a couple times. They should come back.
  • To launch the game, open Steam. Black Mesa should be in your Steam Library now. If it isn’t, try restarting Steam.
  • Make sure you have the 2007 Source SDK installed, which is freely available on Steam. Click the dropdown next to the search bar, click “Tools,” and select the SDK. Restart your computer after it’s installed. Alternatively, you can just click this link.
  • If the blackmesa.7z file is giving you trouble (i.e. if the setup file “can’t find” the .7z file), try uninstalling and then reinstalling 7-zip.
  • Always run the setup.exe file in administrator mode.

For anyone having trouble, make sure that you put all three files into a single folder, and then run the setup.exe file.

@gil I meant this–setup.exe, MD5, blackmesa.7z. That’s what I meant by three files. Download all of those, put them in a single folder and then run the setup.exe file.

You don’t need to extract the zip before you run the setup.exe file. It’ll extract everything for you automatically.

Hey folks,
Just letting you know I dowloaded all three files from Game Front to my laptop, installed Black Mesa and it all works. Verified! The download may take a while, but that’s just because this “Half-Life” thing is kind of popular I guess.

Here’s a tweet we just put out with an example of how it’ll look if it helps:
https://twitter.com/GameFrontCom/status/246773384611000320

If you’re doing all that and still not having luck, I’d suspect you didn’t download the complete file for whatever reason. Your connection could have been interrupted, perhaps. Check the file size on the screenshot ^^ make sure it’s identical.

Also, open the MD5 file in notepad, and check that against the MD5 of the file you downloaded. That’ll tell you for sure if the file made it to your desktop intact. I just did this using this program, which was small and pretty fast.
http://getmd5checker.com/download

Hope this helps, and thanks for using Game Front!

I can’t get the MD5 file to download. It keeps giving me a screen like this when I click the link.

http://gyazo.com/842b68f3d7964b684e2b98d9013ec84e

The link broken currently?

Mark Burnham

On September 14, 2012 at 6:32 pm

@David

Interesting…That’s actually the MD5 hashes you want right there on the page you linked. So you actually don’t need to download it. Just copy those really long strings of characters, run the .7z and the setup.exe through the MD5 checker I linked, and you should be good.

For whatever reason, it doesn’t want to download the md5 for you. It just wants to spit it out right there.

David

On September 14, 2012 at 6:49 pm

Still got a couple hours until the download for the 2nd file finishes, so I’ll try again to see if it cooperates later. For now I’ll throw the lines of code in notepad. I wonder if there’s a setting on my computer that’s doing it. If it matters I’m on win 7 using IE9

Trying to download the Archive and every time I try to download it, it causes me to disconnect from my internet for a second and it won’t download. Any help on how to download it?

Lycanus

On September 14, 2012 at 8:18 pm

When I ran the installer it said it could not find the BlackMesa.7z file even though I had downloaded it and had all three files in the same folder. I looked at the archive file and it was named Black Mesa.7z with a space between Black and Mesa. I removed the space from the file name and the installer could suddenly find the file and worked. Kind of a weird bug but for anyone else having the problem it worked for me.

Hey, the mod looks great.

I’ve downloaded all three files, and ran the setup files.

However I did not choose to run it at the end of the installation as I was doing other things at the time.

Unfortunately I can’t find any executable files to start it. Looked in the bin folder, in Steam, launched the SDK 2007, etc.

I can’t seem to find any obvious launcher. Any help is appreciated.

Hey Mark. I’m having the same problem as David. When I go to download the MD5 file, I just get the hashes. I downloaded the MD5 checker you recommended and I have the setup.exe and .7z files, but I can’t figure out how to run them through the checker to get everything to work, as you instructed David to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I tried re-installing winRAR as Oversight suggested but I still get the “Failed to extract files. 7-zip returned error code: 2″ message.

All 3 files are in the same folder and I have Source SDK Base 2007 (pretty sure I wouldn’t need that for the install anyway).

Mark Burnham

On September 15, 2012 at 7:03 pm

@Dylan.
Sure thing.

1. Open Md5Checker.
2. Click the +Add icon, fourth button from the top left.
3. Browse for wherever you have the blackmesa.7z file, and select it.
4. That’ll get it queued up, and the program will start to analyze the file and then spit out its md5 hash.
5. Now you need to check that against the md5 hash you downloaded from GF. Double click the md5 hash that md5checker spit out. You’ll see a little pop up window. Copy/paste the hash you downloaded into the empty field.
6. If you see the word “same” come up, you’re all good. The file is perfectly intact. If it says “different,” something went wrong with the download and the file is corrupted.

Hope this helps!

Mark Burnham

On September 15, 2012 at 7:10 pm

One other thing guys.

This may sound obvious, but I highly recommend you download all files on a wired connection, don’t try wireless. If you download it via wi-fi, you’re asking for trouble. If your connection gets interrupted the download will fail.

Ok so I have the three files, the setup.exe, the .7z and the .md5, all in one folder, but when I run the setup i get this message:

Processing Archive: blackmesa.7z
Error: Cannot open file as archive
Failed to extract files. 7-Zip returned error code: 2

I’ve tried extracting the .7z with winrar and it tells me it’s corrupt. I’ve downloaded the files over and over again from every available portal and torrent and the same thing happens. From what I’ve seen on forums, other people are having this exact problem and no one has a solution. If you had any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated by many heartbroken gamers.

Thanks for all your help.

If you have problems installing it: DONT extract the rar! Just copy all 3 files (setup.exe, md5 and the big rar file) in on directory and then hit the setup.exe. That solved the problem for me.

Everyone! I downloaded Black Mesa on my Windows 7 laptop here are the steps for a successful installation:
1. Download the 2007 Source SDK (You can find the link to the download on this page or in your Steam module look for Steam/Tools/2007 Source SDK [It might automatically download 2006 Source SDK as well but that's not a big deal.]
2. On Gamefront, download the Half-Life 2 Mod (1 of 3) also known as the blackmesa.7z file. DO NOT EXTRACT YOURSELF. The File size should be 3220800KB
3. Download the Half-life 2 Mod (2 of 3) also known as the blackmesa-setup.exe DO NOT run this program yet.
4. Download the Half-life 2 Mod 93 of 3) also known as blackmesa.md5
5. Now find the three (3) files you just downloaded and place them all under a same folder. I placed mine under “c:/programfiles/steam/steamapps/sourcemods
6.Now run the blackmesa-setuo.exe. do this by double-clicking on the icon where you just placed the 3 files or by right-clicking on the icon and selecting “Run program”.

Hope that helps!

I need some serious help. I really enjoyed playing Half Life 1 and really want to play this. I have downloaded the 7-Zip files, i don’t know where i should extract those to. I also need help with the MD5, my computer says I need to find a program to download in order to open it or choose from a list of programs. I have no idea what to do there, AS for the installing part, i should be fine

I tried to download the MD5 file and I got a blank page with this on it.

f1d86575816f4c6994a5657eebf76409 *BlackMesa.7z
502b417a7857c3ffb82a8b2c93ee1ecf *BlackMesa-Setup.exe

It wont download anything so there’s no way to get the third file. Is there anything I can do?

@BLACKBEARD Try downloading the MD5 with a different browser. Other uses have reported success doing that.

But in any case, those really long strings of characters are actually the MD5 hashes you need. You can copy/paste them to a doc, and use the program mentioned in the troubleshooting tips above to check them against the files you downloaded.

Even without the MD5 file in the folder, when you run the setup.exe file it should install fine. If it downloaded intact, that is.

Thanks for using Game Front!

Ok, I did this:
1. Download STEAM client from the Steam/ Valve website.
2. I restarted STEAM just to be sure.
3. Then I downloaded BLACK MESA from SOFTONIC WEBSITE.
4.Blackmesa7z, Md5, & Black Mesa set-up are downloaded automatically into their BM folder.
5. I took those 3 files (BMesa7z, Md5, & set-up) & placed them in my STEAM /STEAMAPPS/ *SOURCEMODS folder on my computer.

6. I clicked SET-UP & nothing else. STEAM automatically read/extracted everything.
7. Black Mesa installed/loaded/ was able to be play.
8. I saw LAUNCH BLACK MESA button in my GAMES LIBRARY on STEAM. Whenever I want to launch the game, I have to go there.

I got the ‘Could not find BlackMesa.7z — did you download it?’ error at first.. I was running the file directly through the download in utorrent. I ran the same .exe directly from explorer and it worked.. not sure what kind of sense that makes, but.. it worked.

1) Download the archive.
2) Download the setup.
3) Download the .MD5

AFTER

1) Create a folder in your desktop (name Black Mesa)
2) Place in this folder the archive, setup and .MD5
3) Launch in admin the setup.
