Black Ops Adds Mod Support

In a recently released patch for Call of Duty: Black Ops, Treyarch dropped a cryptic hint about the game’s upcoming mod tools in the patch notes:

Added support for mods in preparation for the upcoming tools release.

How soon is “upcoming?” If we base ourselves on last month’s developer tweet, it could be any day now.

In August of last year, Treyarch said:

We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch, although it might not be as diverse a platform for modding as, say, Valve’s Source Engine and Half Life’s mod potential.

We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game. There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm.

It’s been six months since launch; did Treyarch delay the release in order to push some DLC on us first?
