Blizzard Definitely Considering Console Diablo 3

It might seem blasphemous – it certainly does to us – but Blizzard is still very much considering a Diablo 3 port to consoles. That news is courtesy of Computer and Videogames, who spoke frankly with Blizzard COO Paul Sams on the subject. The gist of that discussion is that Blizzard continues to insist that their developmental decisions are based on factors other than financial concerns, and a console version of Diablo 3 just “makes a lot of sense”.

“We get a lot of questions about why we haven’t made a game for consoles before,” Sams said. “I tell them the same thing I tell them about business models: we don’t let business models or platforms drive our decisions. Those are secondary to what’s the most important aspect for us which is the gameplay.” So what does this mean for a console version of Diablo 3? “We think that the way we built it for the PC may need some tweaking, but it will ultimately be the type of game that can really make sense and be really fun, well polished and a true Blizzard-level experience on a console.”

These comments might provoke skepticism. After all, Diablo 3 was originally scheduled to be released ‘when it’s ready’, but is now adhering to an uncharacteristically strict (for Blizzard, anyway) release schedule. But it helps that Blizzard has never considered released a console game despite the fact that it shuts out a huge market, for good reason. “If I’ve got to jump through 17 different hoops and pay a lot more money to be on a console, that causes you to pause. But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t do it if we thought we could deliver a Blizzard-quality product on the platform and it was right for the game in question”

Their track record is basically an unbroken string of high quality games, so it’s probable that a console version of D3 probably wouldn’t suck. But would anyone actually play it? Let us know in comments if you’d consider it.

I think it would do really well. I personally would love to see it come to console. I’ve played plenty of Diablo and also played Torchlight, which feels good, but it’s not the same… Because it’s not Diablo! ESPECIALLY if they managed to make the arena / pvp stuff work. Consoles are crying for something so awesome.

I think this could go either way, It could be an absolute trainwreck, or a masterpiece, like the article says this would be Blizzard’s first console game so the only thing to do, is wait and see. The only concern I would have is how this game would work with the xbox community…

It’s not their first console game.. they put out Diablo 1 on PSX. I played it on the console first and didn’t even know about the PC version until after Diablo 2 came out (which I only knew about and started playing because I liked Diablo 1 on the PSX so much).

Seeing as how a console port got me into the series and they always put out pretty damn good games, I have faith in Blizzard on this and I’m looking forward to it. My only hope is that PS3 users can play with PC users.

Also, they had Startcraft out for Nintendo 64, but it was absolutely terrible. Controls were all jacked up.. I’m not sure that Blizzard was the actual company that put it out though. Ohhh and the Lost Vikings game for SNES was them too.. that game is still bad ass.

There will be no issue if they port to console, the game will be awesome on PC – it’s freakin’ Blizzard.
