Blizzard offers Dial-In Account Security Tool

The value of a World of Warcraft account can’t be undersold and Blizzard takes information security very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that it is offering a new verification service to Battle.Net players, based on dialing a toll-free phone number to verify your location when the system recognizes unusual activity.

The new dial-in service required users to register a specific phone number that can be used for verification, regardless of your physical location. Users are to call the number, from the registered phone, if the game servers suspect strange activity tied to your account.

While this might seem a bit Big Brother-like to some, consider the impact on the stolen WoW accounts that users have no clue are compromised. Blizzard is actively looking for unusual behavior and giving you a means to recognize it every time you log in. I’m an Information Security Geek, so seeing a publisher offer a service like this just makes me very excited. While it may seem like extra steps in the process, it is a great tool to know if you’ve been hacked or phished.

You can find out more about how the new service works on Blizzard’s support web page.
