Blizzard on Console Diablo III: ‘We Don’t Want to Port It’

While they still haven’t been officially announced and sound a bit like they’re still in infancy phases of development, work at Blizzard on console versions of the upcoming Diablo III is progressing.

Diablo III director Jay Wilson told Game Informer that the development team for the two new versions, which is slowly being filled out and is led by Joshua Mosquiera, a former creative director at Ubisoft, isn’t planning to just port Diablo III to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, but to tailor-make the new versions to the hardware on which they’ll run.

“We don’t want to port it,” Wilson said during the GI interview. “We want to build it for console. There’s a key difference. Certainly, a lot of things get brought over, but a port is trying to take a PC game and graft it onto a console.

“Our goal is to make a game that feels like it’s natively made for a console. If we make it, we want it to feel like a Blizzard game and that we built it for that platform from the ground up.”

In fact, Wilson said, Blizzard has never invested in consoles to the degree it plans to with Diablo III. There will likely be some further negotiation with the console manufacturers about Diablo III’s online components and just what the game will entail when it makes the leap to the new hardware, but everyone’s excited for Blizzard to move the game to living rooms, he said.

Thanks, VG247.
