Blizzard Trademarks “Warlords of Draenor”

Last Friday, Blizzard Entertainment filed a trademark for “Warlords of Draenor,” a month after the domain warlordsofdraenor.com was registered.

The trademark was filed for computer games, which should come as no surprise, but does discount the possibility of this being tied to the Warcraft movie. Legal jargon follows:

  • Computer game software, computer game discs, downloadable computer game software, computer game software downloadable from a global computer network, interactive multimedia computer game program; downloadable electronic game software for use on portable electronic devices such as mobile and cellular phones, laptops, handheld computers, and tablet PCs.
  • Entertainment services, namely, providing on-line computer games; providing on-line non-downloadable computer games that may be accessed via a global computer network; providing online news and information in the field of computer games.
  • What can we glean from this trademark? Draenor was the homeworld Warcraft’s orcs and draenei, before the orc shaman Ner’zhul opened the dark portal to the world of Azeroth, tearing Draenor asunder. The fragmented remains of Draenor are now known as Outland. Therefore, “Warlords of Draenor” is definitely the name of the second Diablo 3 expansion.

In all seriousness, we’re likely seeing the title of the next WoW expansion — or, less likely, a booster pack for the yet-to-be-released Hearthstone, as both are set in the Warcraft universe. Given Outland is being referred to as Draenor, we may be time traveling to the days of Warcraft 2 lore, which would be a delightful treat.

With BlizzCon 2013 just a few days away, I bet we’ll find out the secret behind Warlords of Draenor soon enough. What do you think it could be?

They should reboot Azeroth and make it fun and challenging again. Enough with brand new toons being able to hit max level in four days. If they have to pull a FFXI and send everyone into the past to make it work then so be it. The Caverns of Time are established lore. While their at it they can restore the skill trees, unscrew hunter and pretty much roll back to before WoW was ruined (shortly before WOTLK launch).

Oh, and I’m betting WoD is an expansion for the card game..that’s the first thing I thought when I saw the name. So my wishes will have to keep being fulfilled by private servers, barring a miracle.

I’d be surprised if the name is used for Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, simply because that game isn’t even officially launched yet. It’s still in beta. Kind of unlikely for them to announce add-ons for that yet.

Secondly, it’s time for a new WoW expansion. We’ve been expecting one to be announced at Blizzcon this weekend, so the time is nigh. You have to wonder what Warlords of Draenor could mean, though. Is it a return to Outland, with a revamp of that zone? I guess we’ll find out Friday.
