Blizzcon 2011: The Carrier and Mothership Will NOT Be Available in Heart of the Swarm Multiplayer

Blizzard has decided to retire two Protoss air units for the upcoming Heart of the Swarm Expansion. The Carrier was a force to be reckoned with in the original Starcraft. Its swarms of interceptors were feared by Terran and Zerg players alike. However, the Carrier had fallen by the wayside in Starcraft 2. Players instead began to favor the new Void Rays, and the Carrier was rarely used in multiplayer.

The Mothership was new to Starcraft 2, but it’s beginning to resemble a failed experiment. Because players were only allowed one Mothership at a time, it was a little to close to a hero unit for most players’ liking.

Never fear, though. The Protoss will be getting new air units to replace those being retired. See them, along with other brand-new Heart of the Swarm delicacies, over at our new Starcraft 2 Units post.

Oh gee joy!

Zerg gets some very overpower’d unit to completly nullify colossi and they basicly got lurker 2.0 (or rather 5.0)

Terran got a better helion and a smaller thor

And protoss… we get ANNOTHER crappy air unit that will do NOTHING to help us and a crappy copy unit thats probly going to be next to worthless AND we get our carriers and our mothership removed!

JOY! Blizzard your fking brilliant! While your at do you want to send a few hulks over to my house to kick me in the family jewels everytime i pick protoss aswell?

we never get the chance to deploy motherships or carriers in multiplayer why do you think we dont used them. CAUSE WE CANT!

And now they wanna try this experiment on Thor? a slow moving ground unit that cant even shoot air with only one ability, Bombardment. Ill bet it will be hilarious to see a hero-like unit being picked up by a medivact and being shot in the air… boom goodbye hero..

Hmmmm… alot of people are gonna be pissed about this. Removing the Carrier, argubably the most famous Starcraft unit, and replacing it with a capital ship that best counters light air units? Seems they are really trying hard to get rid of any “randomness” in the game (ie interceptors that are uncontrollable). Carriers weren’t used because games rarely went to that stage of the game… same with BCs. But BCs are still here. Why not keep the Carrier and give some of the oracle’s abilities to the Mothership, or vice versa? Oracle sounds like a C&C unit to me. :/
I say keep the Carrier, avoid the pissed-off fans, and find a way to incorporate some of those cool abilities into existing units. Maybe have carriers capable of upgrading to Tempests? Why are they so intent on killing this unit?!
I like the Zerg Swarm host. But sounds too similiar to Lurker in its niche, and Infestor can do the same thing with Infested Terran. Again, I think they’re getting a little ridiculous with this… just bring back the Lurker :) Starcraft BW worked, and was cool! Why change EVERYTHING? Keep the new ideas for single-player.

I’d take the lurker over the Swarm Host any day of the week. Also, they still won’t give Zerg the one thing I want, which is an autocast option for spawn larvae. Until that happens, I refuse to play Zerg.

fact is..Mothership and carriers were too powerful. Arm them with voids and stalkers, and it’s all over…

It’s balance…and I think they did the right thing..

But..I’m not playin it anymore…the Mothership was my thing…and now it’s done…my 50 bucks is gone..

Carriers are the most iconic protoss unit,so dear Blizzard don’t you dare remove them! Remember that the fans wanted the carrier back in “Wings of Liberty” ;-) Just fix the carrier, or bring the tempest in the game without removing the carrier and fix the mothership. The other 2 crappy protoss units look like stupid balls :D
Why does the new lurker have a mushroom stuck on the ass?
Why the hell is the thor replaced by goliaths, and why the hell does terran need a dragoon that can burrow?

They just want to kill the protoss. In SC2 the protoss was striped down from his might. The Mothership tryed to replace arbither but it can’t. It’s to slow and only 1 unit , too easy to kill. We don’t see the mass cloack any more. The carrier was the icon of the SC. Mass carriers was the strongets army. “Players instead began to favor the new Void Rays, and the Carrier was rarely used in multiplayer.” they ware not used because they are too expensive and can be countered before you get a mass and the game just never reach the point when you have the opertunety to use them.
The new protoss unets are joke. 3 uslees units like the Mothership. I think with the “return”of the lurker and the goliath -the protoss is just done.
The new unit Viper , if i undarstand it correctly , it will be flying coppy of the defiler form SC BW.
The teran gets usless transformation to the hellion ,same like the ground viking – it cant mach the goliath from SC BW. But the goliath is back ,replace the Thor .Why? Because zergs have problems with mech? The same like protoss have with EMP , 1 good EMP just kill all the protoss army.
Am I blinde or the terans will have stalkers? Because “Shredder” lookes just like it and the looks of it , it will be the next faild experiment.

Blizzard please DO NOT REMOVE THE MOTHERSHIP AND THE CARRIER. The Mothership is my favorite unit to use. Give it back Give it more Power LIKE IN STARCRAFT II BETA. THE MOTHERSHIP IN STARCRAFT II BETA IS FINE IT IS NOT OP Because you are only allowed 1 unit to deploy and it cost hundreds. GIVING THE NAME MOTHERSHIP TO A UNIT RESEMBLES THAT IT IS THE RACE MOST POEWRFUL WEAPON OF WAR. The time you changed it and became weaker THE 8 TERRAN MARINES COULD KILL A MOTHERSHIP? What’s that?! I don’t believe it, it could be killed by 8 MAN?! With a GUN??!!! That’s wrong so BRING BACK the BETA VERSION. THE CARRIER IS GOOD SO DON’T REMOVE IT! It resembles the old fun in BROOD WAR. PLEASE LISTEN.

If they want changes, Blizzard should remove only mothership (it’s not that much iconic and recognizable) and make carrier to be a megaunit, just like they did it with new Thor.. It can balance carrier and make it better for multilayer. I think it would be much better than removing both carrier and mothership.

In this case new powerful Carrier, flagship of the protoss fleet, can replace Mothership and get some of it’s functions (like cloaking of nearby units).

Carriers were, for me, the most badassed units in SC 1 and SC2. I liked using the Carriers more than the void rays since long after you are away, it still attacks. I hope the carrier is still with us. Also, I hope they make the Hydralisk either cheaper or more powerful.

I dont uderstand for what reason are this units getting removed. just because people dont realize their awsomeness doesnt mean they arent good.also I think its more ok that they will remove the mothership than the carrier because the carrier is a cllasic unit from the original starcraft.
