Blizzcon 2011: World of Warcraft Goes Pokemon

Aside from the addition of pandas, the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft will introduce another groundshaking addition to this massive gaming universe: pet battles!

This is basically Pokemon. You can collect many pets, put them in teams of up to three, and you level them by having them fight turn-based PvE or PvP battles. They decided to make these turn-based so this particular aspect of the game would be more of a “thinking game.” They don’t want your pet to be killed without you realizing why.

As pets level, they can learn new abilities, and you can cash in on your pet’s success by selling or trading it.

Man, this is crazy, but there’s a reason why Pokemon is so popular, and I can’t think of a good argument for why this shouldn’t be in the game. Hell, every game should probably have Pokemon.

Best addition in the history of the game, in my opinion. I would easily pay an additional $15/m for a Pokemon MMO, and they’re essentially handing me one for free, within a world I’m already attached to, with characters and pets I already love.
