Borderlands 2 Mechromancer Update Might Kill Your Character Save

Quick, stop reading this, go to your Steam Library and find Borderlands 2. Right-click it, go to Properties, hit the Updates tab, and switch the game off of “Always keep this game up to date.”

Done? Good. Now, go to C:\Users\[Your User Name]\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData, and back up that whole file somewhere else, like your Desktop. Make yourself a copy.

Done with that? Okay, great. Now let me explain: It appears as though some Borderlands 2 users are experiencing some serious issues with the Mechromancer DLC that Gearbox is releasing today in waves. According to posters on the official Gearbox forums, the result could have effect ranging from resetting your in-game Badass rank and your “Golden Keys,” to losing your character skins and even resetting your character save data altogether.

We’ve reached out to Gearbox for a comment on the issue and are still waiting for an update from the developer on the situation. Meantime, you might want to hold off on the Mechromancer update until the whole thing is sorted. We’re attempting to objectively test for the error as I write this, and this post will be updated as soon as we have more definitive information.

I’m starting to think there is a persistent bug in there somewhere since this is rather similar to people having their badass ranks just mysteriously reset, though even worse.
