Bug Infestation: PS3 Players Reporting Increasing Framerate Issues in Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim might be on-pace to pull down $450 million worldwide for its launch, but lots of players are finding the game is a buggy experience. The latest issue seems to be limited to PS3 players and is related to game saves as they increase in size — players in Bethesda’s official Skyrim forums are reporting that as their game saves get bigger, Skyrim’s framerate starts to suffer.

As some users in the forums are pointing out, game saves generally don’t get up larger than a megabyte or two. Skyrim players are seeing saves getting up to 5MB, however, and apparently around that time, the framerate starts to suffer pretty significantly, and interactions with NPCs stop working or become intermittent. Basically, it’s a game-breaking bug.

What’s worse is the possibility that this sort of thing isn’t news to Bethesda. Similar bugs were reported by Playstation 3 players with Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, although Skyrim is supposed to be built on Bethesda’s entirely new Creation engine, rather than Fallout’s Gamebryo.

It appears there might be (something of) a workaround until Bethesda rolls out a patch for PS3 players — restart your PS3. The longer Skyrim plays and the further players get into the game, the worse the issue becomes, it seems. It may also help to turn off the game’s autosave feature.

Bethesda has said it’s working on a patch for the game for all platforms. Hopefully this gets ironed out soon.

If you’ve got another way of keeping Skyrim running on PS3, let us know in the comments.

It’s another Skyrim bug!

Actually, I just shouldn’t have been working on two posts at once. Fixed it.

It will NOT be fixed or patched. Bethesda has done it again.. Fallout 3 and Fallout new vegas froze every hour for ALL who played it and they just said; nah that doesnt happen.

i knew it was too good to be true.

The ps3 is a running game console, and developers like bethesda don’t care about those of us playing on it by trying to utilize its massive blu ray capabilities. Instead they release games with frame rate issues so bad its not worth trying to play and yet tell us ‘no there’s no problem’ ing bull! My game has frozen every day I’ve tried to play, and the frame rate gets so bad It’s like watching still images being plastered on my tv! Thank you for not giving a about your consumers who make you ridiculesly rich bethesda, this will be my last attempt at buying any game you develop!!

Played for a few hours with no issue… then it started creeping up. Little things like if you tap the sprint button it will confuse the screen so bad it’s like watching still shots and anytime you’re involved with a fight where there is a full graphics load (ie: dragons breathing fire/ice or lots of magic in the air) it gets really bad. My save has seemed to leveled out around 5k or so but is still climbing slowly.

This really detracts from the game.

I’ve been playing for roughly 70hrs (my free time has been well spent), my save file is at 12MB and I’m only at lvl 30. Since lvl 10 which was many many hours ago roughly around 10 the frame rate issues have only escalated. I really hope a patch is ready soon as I love this game but these issues are getting so bad that when I play it’s like watching a photo slideshow and I’m beginning to regret buying a game I can no longer enjoy.

I’m now at level 30 and my save file is 10mg on PS3. The game was lagging from the start during certain scenes and became a lot worse during snowy areas or big cities. I began to notice the game deteriate after some hours of playing and realised that restarting the game fixed it for a while, now I read i’m not the only one as I thought it was my PS3 playing up. The game however has provided hours of fun besides these issues and I think it’s one of the best games I’ve played so far. Sort out the bugs and it’s unbeatable!

I’ve been noticing the low amount of bytes people are experiencing the frame rate issue at. As of today my save file is at 18mb and for the most part it takes approximately20 – 30 mins of gameplay before it starts to get unbarable. Also, i’ve limited myself to only doing missions inside buildings or caves as there is no lag there. If I am super eager to make it one step closer to completing the main story, I’ll do a main mission as soon as I start. And as for Bethesda… they should all run through a paper mill at a high rate of speed until they die from paper cuts… selfish #^@<s!!!
