Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – Xbox Live Gives False Hope to Millions

Earlier today, Xbox Live Marketplace gave false hope to millions when they posted an update on their site for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Posted in their Ticket Window they listed what appeared to be the Multiplayer Beta of the highly anticipated title, which will include test versions of maps and modes. If you were to log onto XBL earlier in the day this is what you would have seen:

If you log on to XBL right now you will notice that the announcement is no longer posted. Apparently, this is not the release date of the beta, instead it is stating that the beta will be available for download through the marketplace in the near future.

Read the XBL announcement one more time. Where does it say that it will be available in the “near future”? Now we understand why it was taken down. According to an Activision representative “There has been no official statement about the release date from Activision at this time. However it will be soon so be on the lookout for the more information shortly.”

Also notice that is says that the downlload of the beta will be free. While this may be the only true thing XBL posted about CoD4 today, the representative for Activision confirmed that, “There are a limited number of spots available in the beta, and you will need a “token” to be able to play.”

Thanks for getting our hopes up Microsoft only to piss us off in the end. Granted, everyone makes mistakes once in a while, but when it is in reference to a title that the whole world is itching to play, it only makes you look worse than you already do. So much for my Friday night.
