Call of Duty XP: Optic Gaming Wins Million Dollar Modern Warfare 3 Tournament and Quits Their Fast Food Jobs
The Modern Warfare 3 tournament was a bizarre spectacle to say the least. Thirty-two teams from many different countries competing for a million dollars worth of prizes while playing a game that none had gotten to practice. Strategies for the new Kill Confirmed game type had to be developed on the fly. Previously unseen maps were explored while a team’s tournament life was on the line. And all the while, guys in giant sumo suits slammed into each other in the back ground.
Some players thrive on this type of chaos and by Saturday night, only two teams remained. The first was four Americans who call themselves Optic Gaming. Their opponents were Team Infinity from the UK. A huge screen was set up as the tournament’s finale was about to commence. Comedian Nick Swardson, famous for his epic Dance Dance Revolution scene in Grandma’s Boy, was on hand to intro the event. The teams were brought to the main stage and the fight was on.
The first match was capture the flag. Optic gaming managed to score two quick captures back to back and their UK rivals never managed to recover. From there they moved on to Domination where Optic Gaming held points A and B almost without interruption for another landslide victory. Team Infinity managed to snag one game of the new Kill Confirmed mode and for a minute it looked like they might mount a comeback. But Optic Gaming’s careful play in the final search and destroy match earned them the victory and the $400,000 first prize.
So what is a team of college kids going to do with $100,000 each? When interviewed after the game, one member of the team remarked “I don’t want to work at McDonald’s anymore.”
