Can’t Play SC2: Heart of the Swarm? Here’s a Troubleshooting FAQ
While being on the wrong side of a technical issue on launch day is always frustrating, sometimes it just can’t be helped. Even the luckiest of us sometimes end up being unable to launch the latest title on release day. Heart of the Swarm is no exception, and while the staggered launch has assuaged some of the typical launch woes (can’t connect, bad servers, etc), it’s entirely possible you might not be able to play Blizzard’s latest.
Before running to the forums and starting a new thread about your issue, make sure to check the known issues post. A number of bugs preventing players from jumping in and playing have already been identified by Blizzard, and some workarounds are mentioned to keep you moving on your merry Zerg-loving way. If your problem isn’t listed in known issues, make sure to check the stickies. If it’s an issue of downloading or disconnection, give the servers a little bit (5 minutes to an hour) to cool off from all the simultaneous log-ins. Finally, if nothing is working, drop a line on the forums.
In addition, I’ll be updating the bottom of this post with the most relevant technical issues and workarounds that I find while trawling through the forums. Nobody should be unable to play a game they really love, after all.
- Problem: Game sometimes freezes at a black screen when loading the second Swarm Campaign Mission after completing the first mission in Heart of the Swarm.
- Workaround: Use alt-f4 when you encounter the black screen and continue campaign after restarting the game. It will continue your progress after the black screen.
- Problem: “Failed to download a required file” when updating through the launcher
- Workaround: Delete C:\ProgramData\Battle.net\Agent. If that doesn’t work, reinstall Starcraft 2.
