I like Dance Central. I own both games. They work for me because they get me to dance, but I’m doing it in the privacy of my own home, where nobody can see me sweat like a motherf–ker. Because that’s gross.
But Harmonix doesn’t want you to hide your dancing any longer, and to that end they’ve released a free app called Dance Central Dance Cam that’s more or less Dance Central on the go. You can play one of seven different songs, and you can dance to them, and you can record yourself dancing and upload the clip to the internet for everyone to see. This sounds like a horrible idea, but whatever. You do what you wanna do.
The app is available on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. They’re covering all the bases. You have no excuse not to try this!

You know when you kill the bad guy, but it turns out he was just a foil for a greater villain?
Well, SOPA may be dead, but ACTA has been lurking in the shadows this whole time, gathering strength and support for the final climactic battle — not just with the US, but with the world. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement seeks to establish international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement.
ACTA’s legal scope is as chilling as SOPA’s:
ACTA encourages service providers to collect and provide information about suspected infringers by giving them “safe harbor from certain legal threats”. Similarly, it provides for criminalization of copyright infringement on a commercial scale, granting law enforcement the powers to perform criminal investigation, arrests and pursue criminal citations or prosecution of suspects who may have infringed on copyright on a commercial scale. It also allows criminal investigations and invasive searches to be performed against individuals for whom there is no probable cause, and in that regard weakens the presumption of innocence and allows what would in the past have been considered unlawful searches.
United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea have already signed the treaty, and Poland will be doing so within the next few days. The European Union, Mexico, and Switzerland have to yet sign the treaty, but did profess their support and have until March 31, 2013 to sign.
The European Parliament allegedly has the final decision over whether the treaty will be dismissed or enacted, so don’t put down your torches and pitchforks just yet — there’s still more protesting to be done.

Bethesda is working on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s next patch, 1.4, and you can be a part of testing it out right now. When the patch goes live, it’ll include the Skyrim Creation Kit: until then, it’s just a laundry list of bug fixes. Still, if you’re interested in checking out a Skyrim that might run better, you can opt in and try to update yourselves.
Fire up Steam and hit the “Steam” menu, then go down to “Settings” to find the opt-in control (it’s marked “Beta Participation”, toward the bottom of the screen). Click it to opt into the Skyrim beta and start downloading the patch. You’ll want to back up your saved games first, though.
You can check out the full changelog of what’s going into Patch 1.4 right here.

Today marks the first time Call of Duty: ELITE subscribers are getting premium content for their $50 per year, and while Activision and Infinity Ward have said they’ll never change the Call of Duty multiplayer experience — you’ll never have to pay to play Call of Duty, they said.
But you can pay if you want, and that’s the way the companies like it.
Speaking with Kotaku, Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling answered the question of whether Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is, inf act, a subscription game now that Elite has ramped up and taken full effect. Bowling had some interesting answers, continuing with the company line that the purpose of Elite is to offer options to hardcore players, while maintaining the casual game experience as well. Basically, if you want more Modern Warfare 3, you can pay for it. If not, then don’t.
“I think we like to give the option to have that experience,” Bowling said about whether MW3 is now a subscriptin game similar to an MMO. “But it’s been very important to me, personally, to have that as an option, that it’s not a ‘We are a subscription game’ or ‘We are not a subscription game’. It was about giving more flexibility to our hardcore without hindering the casual guys from enjoying it how they always enjoyed it.”
It’s important to note that the content available for Elite subscribers in-game isn’t exclusive — paying the $50 per month gets users all the downloadable content that’ll be released for the game during the year, and those users get it a little sooner than everyone else, but that’s about it. It’s slightly cheaper to pay the subscription, but it’s not the only way to get ahold of it.
And plenty of games beyond Modern Warfare 3 are pushing “season passes,” which are effectively paying first and getting DLC later. It’s true that Call of Duty is offering subscription-based content in the form of Elite (even though it’s more peripheral to the game), but it’s certainly not the only game that’s pushing online passes and subscription-like content to keep people paying.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson discussed his thoughts on what it means to be an indie developer. He believes that nowadays, being an indie developer is easier thanks to distribution platforms that allow and encourage gamers to buy more games, which may explain why he’s fine with people pirating Minecraft — he knows enough people will pay for it to still turn a profit.
Notch said:
These days it’s become hip to pay for indie games. That’s partly down to people charging for it, like with the Humble Indie Bundle, and partly because of Steam doing awesome stuff.
Remarkably, Minecraft achieved its current level of success without Steam’s aid.
Notch has even begun to question whether Mojang can still be labeled an indie developer:
I don’t think [Mojang] are indie in the sense of how I used to work any more, because we have a payroll to worry about and we need to do stuff to ensure the company lasts.
We have other stuff which influences what we do other than trying to focus on the games. We make sure me and Jacob are only focusing on game development so the founders are still developing. But as a company, I don’t think we are indie in the sense that I used to mean it. But in the other sense of indie – as in we make games we want to play without having any external dependencies – then yeah, we’re indie.
Notch even offered encouraging words for aspiring indie developers:
I think it’s easier to be an indie game developer these days because back in the day it wasn’t called being an “indie developer” but a “garage programmer.” You weren’t expected to charge for your game so you couldn’t do it. People never charged. It was just a hobby.
How often do you buy indie games?

In a recent interview with Massively, City of Heroes lead designer Matt Miller answered questions about the death of the game‘s most iconic character, Statesman.
When asked if a new hero will come forward and take the role of the man on the box, Miller replied:
We need to promote someone from within the Freedom Phalanx to be the new leader, but that will still leave a hole to be filled. We have plans to fill that hole with a character submitted by a community member in a contest. We did this prior to launch and picked Numina to be one of the Surviving Eight, and we’d love to do this sort of thing again. We’ll have more details on that in the coming months, but suffice it to say that your character has a chance at making into the official game lore as a member of Paragon City’s signature supergroup.
Smart move. This kind of community engagement is a great way to build a lasting relationship between developer and player, as well as spark renewed interest in an older game. Having a character that you created be promoted to an entire player base is the kind of exposure that the average gamer can only dream of.
Will you participate in the contest?

New Muppet-related DLC is coming to LittleBigPlanet 2 and it will be available before the end of January.
The Muppet cast is about to put on the show of a lifetime — but only if you can stop the mysterious Phantom from interfering. While high-caliber firearms would be my tools of choice, this DLC pack arms you with two new inventions: Attract-O-Gel and Attract-O-Tweak. The gel allows you to run up walls and across ceilings, while the tweak preps any material to receive the gel.
DLC contents:
Release dates may vary, depending on your territory, but Sony is gunning for 25/01/2012.

Ninja Gaiden 3‘s Team Ninja might have lost Tomonobu Itagaki, but it’s still taking the game (as well as looking as cool as possible in dev diary videos) very seriously. Check out the video embedded below for a taste of what’s going on behind the scenes at Team Ninja.

Grand Theft Auto V and the next installment in the Call of Duty franchise will account for 25% of the games you buy this year.
Well, maybe not you, personally, but according to a report by US-based financial analyst Baird Equity Research, the two upcoming titles will account for almost a quarter of all video game sales in the coming fiscal year. The group also estimates a third of all game-related revenue made in the next year will come from those two titles alone.
Given COD’s track record, this hardly comes as a surprise. After all, Call of Duty: Elite received one million premium signups in less than a week. Bobby Kotick has his hands in your pockets, and he won’t pull them out until he’s grabbed every last dime.
Will you buy GTA V and/or COD4?

It took nine months of hard work, but the folks over at GenGAME have a working version of a 1:1 scale replica of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — in Minecraft. Not only can you watch a sweet video fly-through (above), but for a limited time, you can experience Hyrulecraft yourself by connecting to the GenGAME server at 64.79.106.218.
An alpha version of the map is available for download, and the build team hopes to have a completed server ready later this year which will include a unique Minecraft MMO experience including quests, NPCs, dungeons, free build zones, guilds, and more of the classic Minecraft stuff you know and love.
Crysis, now Zelda. What game would you like to see Minecrafted?

The dearth of new 360 titles as of late may have a few gamers wondering, “What’s up, Microsoft?” Well, Microsoft has answered the question with a smooth, “Chill out, dawg. Quality over quantity.” I paraphrase, of course.
Microsoft corporate VP Phil Spencer said:
Creating core IP, as many first-and third-parties have seen over the years, isn’t an easy thing. I went through the process of creating Gears with Epic and I know the sweat, time, and effort that went into it. I also worked on things like Alan Wake, Too Human, Crackdown, and stuff that didn’t hit the same level of success, but had an equal amount of sweat equity and heart go into getting created.
Spencer went on to say that the 360′s lineup is about “quality and impact, not number of releases a year.”
That almost seems like a tacit admission that it’s safer to release another tired sequel rather than take a risk into an original idea. Unfortunately, the video game industry is a business, and that’s why the only risk-taking we see originates from indie developers.

One of the coolest things about working in this industry is that you occasionally get a chance to meet and talk to some amazingly awesome people. Case in point: we recently got a chance to chat with legendary game designer Ken Rolston. He’s currently working on Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the upcoming epic RPG from 38 Studios. Prior to this, he’s been lead designer for Oblivion and Morrowind as well as a creative visionary in the tabletop RPG industry.
Rolston’s always a great interview. Not only is he extremely intelligent, but he brings a unique understanding of RPGs to the table. If you don’t believe me, just check out the interview below and all the awesome answers he provided us.
GameFront: For the folks who don’t know you, can you talk a little bit about your background prior to Kingdoms of Amalur, both in video games and tabletop games? Can you tell us what it’s like working with such well known folks as R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and of course Curt Schilling?
Ken Rolston: I began in pen-and-paper RPG design back in the late ’70′s, best known for my work with Paranoia, Runequest/Glorantha, GAMES WORKSHOP, and various incarnations of D&D. I migrated to computer games in 1994, and since then I am best known as lead designer of the Elder Scrolls games, Morrowind and Oblivion. I retired after Oblivion, thinking there were no more frontiers to explore. [Oops. Apparently, I am an idiot.]
Within four months, I was suckered into joining a group of old cronies at Big Huge Games, and have been working on the systems and narratives that became Reckoning since then.
Curt Schilling is a huge human, scary to stand next to, but otherwise surprisingly charming. He is a good, honest, fearless, credible leader, and obsessed with winning. Me, too.
Todd MacFarlane is an artist and a teacher, and a pleasure to steal wisdom from. He is the only Visionary who is unquestionably crazier and more dangerous than I am when speaking to a crowd. He gets enthusiastic and climbs on tables and flails around when demonstrating his theories about visceral, dramatic animation, so I duck a lot and keep a careful eye on him.
R.A. Salvatore is the most painful Visionary to work with, but only because he can create better fantasy settings and narratives than I can. I will slowly get over this terrific blow to my ego. In compensation, he did all the work on creating the history, themes, and major characters of a living, breathing fantasy world… 10,000 years worth. Normally, it would be me who had to do all that work. So I am busily forgiving him.
GF: With your extensive background in RPGs, how do you see the genre in video games right now? Is it progressing, regressing, or treading water? How has your background in tabletop games affected your approach to creating video games? Are there specific examples you could give us of systems in Kingdoms of Amalur that draw on that background?
KR: Video RPGs are so good now, and there are so many to choose from, that I make the frequent mistake of thinking we live in the Perfect Golden Age of RPG Utopia.
And then someone goes and makes something new and cool, and we’re off to the races again.
But despite the fact that video RPGs have made such deep and passionate inroads into the mainstream market, I still feel they are slow-paced, abstract, and awkward. Reckoning reflects my hunger for a faster pace of action and combat drama, and a desire for simpler, easier-to-use interfaces. Video RPGs are naturally the deepest, longest, and most complicated kinds of video game entertainment… that’s whatmakes them great. But making them just a tiny bit less clumsy in the interface, and just a big, fat, huge amount more physical and exciting in combat, gives them more fun-per-unit-time. Me? I want All-Fun, All-the-Time, Right-Now, thank-you-very-much.
Pen-and-paper narratives and settings continue to influence me in video game design, but systems? Not so much. Combat in tabletop RPGs is already, and always has been, slow-paced and awkward, mired in its wargame traditions. Dialog, improvisation, open-ended story-telling… that’s what tabletop RPGs are still best at… WAY better than video RPGs.

Minecraft Pocket Edition, which allows you to play Minecraft on your Android phone, is a pretty cool thing, at least if you’re happy playing only in build mode.
Apparently many people are, in fact, happy with that, because the thing has sold 700,000 copies since it went on sale back in August on the Xperia Play and September for other devices. Minecraft continues to make people happy, even in mobile form. Yay Minecraft.
The Pocket Edition is missing some things, though, like helicopters. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
Mobile gaming ain’t dead yet!

EVE Online until recently had two dev teams, Team Best Friends Forever and Team Pink Zombie Kittens. Last week, the folks at CCP announced that those teams have been disbanded, and they have been replaced with three teams, Team Super Friends, Team Game of Drones and Team Five 0. This happened because CCP has just been hiring so many damn new people that the two groups had become unmanageable in their current state.
CCP had a problem, and that problem was that they were so well off that they could hire too many people. That’s always a good thing to hear in an age when studios seem to be shutting down left and right. Congrats on being so damn successful, CCP.

Genesis. Saturn. Dreamcast. These are hardware names that will live on in the memories of dedicated gamers old enough to tell you what windows 95 was like without having to consult wikipedia. Alas, Dreamcast failed and took Sega’s hardware operation down with it, reducing them to a pale, second-party-developer shadow of their former selves. It was a sad outcome, true, but you might want to sit down remain standing, because it appears Sega has quietly been making a comeback. In public restrooms.
See, though it’s been a thing since late 2010, news has now trickled out that the developer is working to relieve the pressure caused by the end of their hardware business with a new revenue stream that ought to prompt a fountain of interest no matter what mood you’re in. The project: a public urinal-based interactive device called – and I promise we are not just pissing in the wind here – Toylet. Toylet combines a series of sensors with a digital (and waterproof) display installed on a public urinal at, ahem, eye level, that turns the boring old experience of utilizing the bathroom at your local bar into a video game.
Sega Spokesman Hiroyuki Tanaka offered this justification: “This gives bar customers more things to talk about when they return from bathrooms to their tables.” It also gives them advertisements to watch after they’re finished, um, playing, a major incentive for bars. That it encourages customers to stand closer to the urinal is an added bonus. “We have had good feedback from our customers that toilet cleanliness has improved,” Tanaka said.
So far, Toylet has 5 games available that allow players to compete against previous, ahem, ‘users’, in contests of volume, accuracy and power. But Sega isn’t releasing this new IP freely. Each unit costs $1900 (approximately). However, because of the advertisements and the possibility of increased toilet cleanliness, bars apparently see it as a good investment – 130 Toylets have been installed in bars across Japan netting Sega a cool warm $247,000 (approximately), making quite a splash for a developer once regarded as a number one hardware manufacturer, but now known more for disappointing Sonic the Hedgehog games.
The only downside to all of this is that the there’s no equivalent for the ladies. Alas, being a guy I have a bit of difficulty imagining how that would work, so I want to encourage any of our female readers to chime in with your suggestions for a XX equivalent in comments. In the meantime, here’s a video from last summer detailing this thing.
