C&C 12th Anniversary – Download C&C Gold For Free

“I got a present for ya’ !!”

It’s hard to believe Command & Conquer is 12 years old. Makes me feel old. I still remember walking into Best Buy on a random sunny day in late summer of 1995. I remember seeing this slick looking grey box on the shelf showcasing some spec-ops looking dude on the front. Picked it up and looked at the back of the box. Sold. Ahh, those were the simple days. The DOS days, even.

In honor of C&C’s 12th anniversary, Electronic Arts is providing Command & Conquer Gold as a free download.

In order to give back to the fans for over 12 years of devotion we are putting together a 12th Anniversary celebration during the month of September. However, as any Command & Conquer fan knows, the true party starts today, August 31st, which marks 12 years since Command & Conquer Gold launched way back in 1995.

To kick the celebration off, today we have a special surprise which we are certain new and old Command & Conquer fans will enjoy. We are providing the original Command & Conquer Gold as a free download, compatible for Windows XP! This is the same version included with the collectors pack Command & Conquer: The First Decade, and is now available for you to download for free!

That’s pretty sweet of them. For those who have never played the original, here’s a good opportunity. If I recall, C&C Gold was two cdrom discs. EA recommends that you burn these images to discs, but as many of us know, there are alternative ways of installing the game (virtual drives). EA also only claims this release to work under XP; although, I can see it having no problem under Vista. If there is a Vista issue (and I can’t imagine why), I’m sure you Vista owners will find a way to get it running. I think most will find more issue with the dated graphics. But what can you expect for free?

Be on the lookout for more goodies from EA as they celebrate C&C’s anniversary during the month of September.

Here’s what I can’t believe:

EA has given something away for free.

Just…you know…doesn’t sound right. Granted it’s only for this month too, but…I downloaded it over night. Woo.

There is a Vista issue. And it isn’t one that is easily circumvented. The installer’s 16 bit. Vista, as opposed to XP, no longer understands 16 bit code as the emulator has been pulled. Unless there is some way to extract the files manually and place them in the right directories, you can’t install the game.

Set Install.exe to use Windows 95 Compatiability Mode. It actually works in Vista…

I love original Command and Conquer….my first computer game…well, that would be Lode Runner, but whatever.

I downloaded the C@C file, I have it in a folder, but it won’t let me extract the files. I want to follow the directions and Westwood gave, but it won’t work until the setup.exe can actually be extracted. What other avenues could I take? Thanks.

I unzipped and changed the capatabilty to win 95, but it is saying unable to locate nessesary files, run setup.exe from disc, which is what I did in the first place, do I have to change capatability on every file?
