CCFC Calls for Removal of Ads from Webkins

waffles2.gif

The Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood (CCFC) has set its sites on Ganz’s Webkins web site, demanding it remove outside advertising and links. Webkinz.com is currently the most visited virtual world for children in the U.S.

For those of you without children, Webkins are stuffed animals that come with an individual code that allows the child to join the Webkins virtual world. Players earn points by playing games to purchase special items for their Webkins virtual twin and its home.

Ganz didn’t bother to inform parents, many of whom purchase Webkinz toys for their children expecting that the website will be free of outside advertising and links. By opening the site to advertisers, Ganz is choosing to maximize profits at the expense of parents’ trust and children’s wellbeing.

Ganz has added outside advertising without informing parents. CCFC is hosting a petition addressed to  CEO Howard Ganz to cease and desist.

Ouch. Ads are bad in games. Especially in area ads. Sidebar ads aren’t so bad, assuming they’re content o.k.
