Check Out A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda
Sometimes you really, really need an SNES Fix. Generally your options are pretty robust: Wii Download, a wonky combo Famiclone like FC Twin, or (gasp!) trying to make that decaying husk of an ancient shell still bearing the official “Super Nintendo Entertainment System” logo actually work.
But what if it’s not a specific game, but the look and feel of a brand new never-before-played SNES game that you’re looking for. Then you’re in luck. A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda is something you should check out immediately. It’s a deliberately retro side-scrolling platformer set in the kind of ambiguous industrial future (AKA Japan, but with Robots!) in which extremely awesome robot-things battle extremely awesome mech warriors. It even has an extremely vague setting:
The world is under attack, and the machines have been taken control by the mysterious Zytron. Our hero Ares. finds himself mysteriously immune to the Zytron virus, and now the only one who can rescue the scientist stranded on the Zytron infected space station, and destroy the cause of the threat in the process.
Love it. AEA is actually the first in a planned series of platformers featuring the Not-Samus Not-Bionic Commando Not-Mega Man character. It’s also pretty cheap at 9 bucks, and having spent a good chunk of my weekend playing, I can verify totally worth it.
Enjoy the trailer.
